A tragic incident in São Paulo, Brazil, has once again revealed how dangerous intervening in a mobile phone theft can be. According to a report by UK-based The Sun, 35-year-old André Gayoso began chasing a suspect on a bicycle who stole his phone late at night. However, as a result of this chase, Gayoso lost his balance and violently crashed into a square metal post placed for security in front of a business. Due to the severity of the accident, Gayoso's jaw and face were seriously damaged, and he was forced to undergo a long recovery process due to the trauma he experienced.

Rushed to the hospital immediately after the accident with a serious condition, André Gayoso remained in a coma for exactly 13 days during his treatment. Losing approximately 20 kilograms during this long and difficult process, Gayoso recounted the details of how the event unfolded while recalling those moments. Stating that he ran in a narrow area and lost his balance while trying to catch the suspect, Gayoso explained that he hit his head and jaw on the metal bar placed in front of the shops as a result of the fall. The physical trauma, which began with the shock of the event, marked the beginning of a long medical battle that would permanently change Gayoso's life.

Doctors initially attempted to take a skin graft from his left forearm to repair Gayoso's severely injured jaw, but this method did not yield successful results. It was understood that Gayoso, who required more comprehensive surgical intervention due to severe damage and tissue loss in his jaw, was planned to undergo a jaw transplant of approximately 7 centimeters. Expert surgeons performed a difficult and complex operation lasting approximately 11 hours, transplanting the bone piece they took from Gayoso's right shinbone (tibia) to his jaw. This risky and long operation went down in history as a vital intervention made for the patient to regain his facial structure and jaw function.

Gayoso, who went through a very difficult recovery process including repeated corrective surgeries and aesthetic operations, has had to undergo a total of 11 corrective and 3 aesthetic operations to date. While prosthetic teeth were placed in place of the six teeth he lost due to serious trauma, he struggled with the psychological and physical difficulties caused by staying in a coma for a long time and being unable to speak. Undergoing additional operations to regain his ability to speak and correct permanent deformities in his mouth, Gayoso recalled the helplessness and fear of those days with the words, "I couldn't speak, I had lost part of my jaw and mouth, and I couldn't move," describing the shock he experienced when he woke up.

This horrific accident, which occurred for the sake of getting his phone back, completely changed André Gayoso's life and came at a very heavy price. Gayoso managed to hold on to life thanks to his jaw reconstructed with tissue taken from his shinbone by doctors, and thanks to the surgeries he underwent, he not only saved his life but also made an intense effort to regain his aesthetic appearance and basic functions. This incident, the treatment of which is still ongoing, resonated widely in Brazil as a striking example of how great risks individual interventions can carry and took its place on the agenda.
