Decision of inspection from the Ministry of Trade for those who increase the prices of packaged water

Following Türkiye's transition to the deposit return system (DOA), it has been claimed that serious price fluctuations occurred in the packaged water and beverage market. It was noted that with the start of the system, some manufacturers, suppliers, and retail outlets increased their product prices. Complaints increased, particularly regarding price hikes far exceeding the rise in costs. It came to the agenda that citizens were victimized due to sudden price increases in water and beverage products. In the official statement made, it was stated that following the update of the deposit participation fee applied to plastic, glass, and metal packaged beverages, some companies engaged in exorbitant pricing. Ministry officials emphasized that any price increase exceeding the cost rise brought by the deposit system will be considered an 'unjust price'. Relevant industry representatives and market managers were explicitly warned by the Ministry regarding these rule violations. Authorities stated that administrative sanctions will be decisively implemented to protect consumer rights.

In the Ministry's statement, attention was drawn to the goals of recycling and efficient resource utilization, which are compatible with environmental policies. Reminding that the main purpose of the deposit system is to reduce plastic waste and protect nature, it was announced that this system will not be allowed to be turned into a tool for commercial profit. It is aimed to prevent this eco-friendly project from losing its reputation in the eyes of the public due to exorbitant pricing. It was stated that manufacturers and sellers will not be allowed to disrupt market balance under the pretext of supporting recycling steps. It was emphasized that the protection of consumer rights, market order, and fair competition conditions is one of the top priorities for the government.

Within the scope of these inspections, all relevant beverage groups, especially packaged water, and the supply chain are being closely examined. While inspection teams continue their field investigations, the imposition of high administrative fines on companies that unjustifiably raise prices is on the agenda. The Ministry announced that inspection processes will expand and continue to prevent all increases that exceed cost justifications. It was reported that legal processes may also be initiated to prevent permanent damage to the market by companies making unjust profits. It was promised that all administrative and legal measures will be taken to ensure market stability and re-establish consumer confidence.

This battle for balance between recycling projects and consumer rights creates an economic agenda that will be closely monitored in the upcoming period. Although the innovations brought by the DOA system are inevitably reflected on market shelves in the short term, the exploitation of this situation is being prevented by the state through strict regulations. Such initiatives, which negatively affect the public's budget planning, will be concluded with legal sanctions to serve as a deterrent.
