Secret Release of the Film 'Satluj' by Director Honey Trehan and the Subsequent Surprise Removal

Famous Indian director Honey Trehan explained in detail for the first time how the film 'Satluj' arrived on the digital platform and the extraordinary process that took place. After years of uncertainty and shattered dreams of a theatrical release, the film was surprisingly released on the ZEE5 platform. Trehan stated that this digital debut was kept highly confidential and that almost no one outside the core team of the project had any information regarding the release date. However, the film being completely removed from the platform in Hindistan just a few hours after its release highlighted once again how complex the process was. Trezan opened up about this veil of secrecy in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, sharing the long and arduous struggle behind the film.

Stating that the film's premiere was planned in total secrecy, Trehan expressed that only the core team at the RSVP production company and the ZEE5 management were aware of the situation. He noted that outside this small group, famous actor Diljit Dosanjh was the only person who knew the film would be released that evening. Due to years of delays and obstacles, the director admitted that he initially had difficulty believing the film would actually be released. Indicating that even on the day of the premiere, he messaged the production team to ask whether the film would truly be put on the digital platform that night, Trehan stated that he felt immense relief following a confirmation message from Dosanjh shortly after. The ZEE5 platform was also praised by the director for successfully executing this surprise release and fully backing the film.

It was revealed that the biggest reason behind the film 'Satluj' not being released in cinemas was the long and grueling censorship process. Trehan explained that they had always embraced the traditional theatrical release vision to meet moviegoers, but the project got stuck in the massive bureaucracy of the Hindistan Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). He stated that the board requested numerous changes and cuts from the film, but the reasons behind these demands were not clearly explained to the producers. Despite the producers applying to the courts and trying legal battle routes, no clear solution was reached regarding the theatrical release. Following this deadlock, producer Ronnie Screwvala and the ZEE5 team decided that the best and fastest way for the film to reach the audience was through a direct digital release.

Touching upon the film's title change process, the director detailed how the original title 'Punjab 95' was transformed into 'Satluj'. He stated that during the certification phase, the producers faced demands for over 127 cuts and edits, and that communication with the CBFC reached a complete breaking point in the Aralık month. He mentioned that although the name 'Punjab 95' was strongly associated with the project among the public, the name 'Satluj' had been considered as one of the original title options alongside 'Gallughara' from the very beginning. Furthermore, legal concerns regarding a variation of the number '1995' in terms of title registration reduced the already uncertain producers' desire to open a new lawsuit to zero. The process was accelerated by choosing the name 'Satluj', which had already been registered by the production house, and it was emphasized that this decision was made entirely by the producers and the director, not by ZEE5.

Adding that despite all these hardships, they received highly positive and enthusiastic reactions from the audience shortly after the film's release, Trehan stated that this situation made them deeply happy. He noted that immediately after its digital release, viewers from all over the world shared their emotions and the impact the film created via social media and other communication channels. Even though it faced the restrictions requested by the censorship board and was abruptly removed from release in Hindistan, it was seen that the film managed to reach large masses thanks to its digital presence. Stating that the reactions proved that the film's significant message was understood on a global scale, the director expressed his belief that this epic struggle was not in vain. It is commented that this process is a turning point that re-questions the dynamics between censorship rules and digital release platforms in terms of Indian cinema history.
