Alcohol Checks in Mexico During the 2026 World Cup: 891 Drivers Penalized

In Mexico's capital, Mexico City (CDMX), the traffic enforcement operations called "Drive Sober" (Conduce Sin Alcohol), implemented during the 2026 FIFA World Cup period, have yielded results. During the large-scale operations conducted between 11 June and 8 July, legal proceedings were initiated against 891 drivers who exceeded the permitted alcohol limit. Authorities aimed to keep traffic safety at the highest level and prevent alcohol-related accidents throughout the massive event. During these days when millions of people gather around screens and celebrations intensify, such as during the World Cup, the strict security measures implemented drew attention. Mexico City Public Security Secretariat (SSC) teams established a massive enforcement network during this period, administering a total of 265,585 AlcoStop tests. These high figures reveal how comprehensively and decisively the city's traffic safety management is being conducted. The teams continued their enforcement efforts day and night on the city's main arteries and roads leading to celebration areas.

As a result of the tests conducted, 883 vehicles were also impounded during the proceedings, in addition to the 891 drivers found to have consumed alcohol above the legal limits. These vehicles were taken to the vehicle storage facilities (corralón) belonging to the police department until the legal process is completed and the necessary fines are paid. The confiscation of the vehicles is considered a physical indication that drunk driving has serious consequences. Such sanctions are expected to prevent future potential violations by inconveniencing drivers not only financially, but also in terms of time and practicality. Authorities emphasized that no offending driver was overlooked and that the laws were enforced to the fullest extent.

On the other hand, to manage the excitement brought by the World Cup in a safe environment, not only road inspections were carried out. Comprehensive measures were taken around the Football Festivals organized throughout the city, the massive FanFest event area in the National Palace (Zócalo) region, and the "Last Mile" (Última Milla). Furthermore, 11,182 preventive alcohol tests were administered at the "Park and Ride" points, which allow citizens to park their private vehicles before entering the city center and switch to public transportation. Inspections carried out in such areas for the smooth continuation of the organization played a critical role in preventing potential chaos and accidents.
