71-Year-Old Woman Built a Mountain Cabin for 5,000 Euro by Watching YouTube Videos

A 71-year-old woman living in a small town in the Girona province of Spain is about to move into a mountain cabin she built entirely with her own hands. Using the pseudonym Yaya Bushcraft and keeping her identity hidden, this woman completed this extraordinary project, which she started about five years ago, without any previous construction experience. This venture, which cost less than 5,000 euro in total, stands out as a silent rebellion against today's growing housing crisis and high rent prices. This inspiring story, told on content creator Diego Revuelta's YouTube channel, quickly managed to attract the attention of a wide audience. According to the woman's own statement, her main goal is quite clear: "I want to live and die in a house I built myself."

The main reason behind the woman's radical decision is not poverty, but an alternative life philosophy she has adopted since her youth. Wearing Prada glasses, implying that she is neither poor nor rich, Yaya Bushcraft openly opposes the consumer culture of modern city life and the status anxiety that puts people in debt. Instead of a routine life filled with a television, a couch, a remote control, and luxury brands, she emphasizes that she prefers a life close to nature, simple, and independent. According to her, luxury items that people buy even though they cannot afford them are one of the biggest obstacles to true freedom. Reaching this point was not easy at all; on the contrary, it went through a long and arduous trial-and-error process. Starting this project at the age of 68, the woman learned her construction and survival skills entirely by watching YouTube educational videos. Moreover, the cabin, which now looks nearly complete, is actually her fourth attempt; the previous three cabins either collapsed or became unusable. After the first cabin collapsed on her due to weak legs and a heavy superstructure, she was not discouraged, believing that every mistake was a valuable lesson. Stating that she felt stronger with each failure, the woman advocates the importance of focusing on solutions rather than fearing problems.

This rustic cabin of about 18 square meters was built with wood and stone obtained from nature, in a way that bears the traces of the eco-friendly "bushcraft" (wilderness survival and primitive crafts) philosophy. A log floor resembling an underfloor heating system, a wooden door made by the woman herself, and a kitchen with a fireplace are among the main features of this tiny structure. However, as in every major project, there are some setbacks here; for example, she faced the problem of fireplace smoke filling the interior and had to order a custom part from a blacksmith to solve it. In addition, the land where the cabin is located does not belong to the woman; it was built upon a mutual use agreement made with the landowner. Nevertheless, the woman draws strength from the lack of any infrastructure (electricity, water, sink) on the land and from simultaneously running a forestry and permaculture project, believing that this will prevent the authorities or the landowner from evacuating the place.

Claiming to have been one of the first female journalists to write in the fields of science and technology in Spain, Yaya Bushcraft has changed jobs and moved constantly since the age of 17, refusing to adapt to the system. Not wanting to postpone the freedom in her life until her retirement, the woman's witty defense that her situation of "having nothing" makes her untouchable, even in the event of a fine being imposed, is noteworthy.
