US Senator Lindsey Graham Passed Away at the Age of 71

Lindsey Graham, one of the influential Republican members of the United States Senate, passed away at the age of 71. In a statement made by his office, it was noted that Graham died as a result of a "short and sudden illness." According to reports in the American press, emergency teams were dispatched for the senator, who was learned to have suffered a cardiac arrest at his residence in the Capitol on Saturday evening. Shortly before his passing, Graham had returned from a visit to Ukraine and made plans to appear on the "Meet the Press" program on Sunday morning. Upon the news of his death, then-US President Donald Trump offered his condolences, using the words "one of the greatest people and senators I have ever known" for Graham.

Representing the state of South Carolina, Graham was among the prominent figures in defense policies and foreign relations throughout his political career. A US Air Force lawyer and a member of the South Carolina Air National Guard, Graham was elected to the House of Representatives in 1994 and moved to a Senate seat in 2002. The politician, who recently served on key committees including the chairmanship of the Senate Budget Committee, was known as a steadfast supporter of Israel and Ukraine. According to Zelensky's statement, Graham visited Ukraine exactly ten times following the large-scale invasion launched by Russia in 2022. During these visits, the two thoroughly discussed the country's air defense needs and sanctions bills against Russia. Expressing his gratitude on behalf of the Ukrainian government and people, Zelensky emphasized that Graham's admiration for the courage of the Ukrainian people's protectors will always be remembered.

The steps taken and statements made by Graham during his recent visit to Ukraine also revealed his pursuits in global diplomacy. Speaking to journalists in Mikhaylivska Square in Kyiv, the experienced senator argued that the most critical point for ending the Ukraine War and achieving peace is Beijing. Stating that China has disproportionate influence over Russia, Graham expressed that this influence should be used for a beneficial purpose for the world. Suggesting that Moscow could be forced to the negotiating table if Ukraine's military capacity is strengthened and sanctions are harmonized with a diplomatic initiative, the politician stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not yet reached the negotiation stage, but added that reaching this point is not far off.

One of the most significant turning points in Graham's political life occurred in his relationship with Donald Trump. During the 2016 Presidential election process, Graham, who said that making Trump the nominee would destroy the party and accused him of "racism, xenophobia, and religious intolerance," completely changed this attitude over time. Transforming into one of Trump's most loyal allies and close partners with whom he frequently played golf during his presidency, the politician still did not hesitate to voice his criticisms on certain issues. Openly opposing Trump's decision to pardon approximately 1,500 supporters involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, Graham warned that this situation could pave the way for an increase in violent incidents in the future. Never married and living in Seneca, South Carolina, Graham left a lasting mark on American history with his deep-rooted career spanning over six to ten years in the political arena.
