In a tragic incident that occurred in the Aksu district of Antalya, the lifeless body of 72-year-old Durkadın Kalkan was found in an irrigation canal. It is estimated that the elderly woman lost her life while being swept away in the water canal located approximately four kilometers away from her home. Following the incident, numerous health, gendarmerie, and fire brigade teams dispatched to the region launched a large-scale investigation in the area. The elderly woman's lifeless body was quickly pulled out of the water upon the notification of local residents who noticed her being swept away in the irrigation canal. The body, which was understood to have been in the water for a long time, was sent to the forensic medicine institution after an initial examination at the scene.

The incident occurred in the irrigation canal located on 9081 Sokak, Yurtpınar Mahallesi, Aksu district. When citizens in the vicinity saw a person drifting motionless in the irrigation canal, they immediately reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center. Immediately after the notification, gendarmerie teams and rescue squads affiliated with the Antalya Büyükşehir Belediyesi İtfaiye Daire Başkanlığı were directed to the scene. However, before the official teams arrived at the area, the operation of pulling the body out of the water was carried out by young citizens in the area. This rapid intervention prevented the body from being swept further away and lost.

Health teams arriving at the scene determined that the person pulled from the water showed no signs of life. Following detailed identification work carried out at the scene by the Jandarma Suç Araştırma (JASAT) teams, it was determined that the lifeless body belonged to Durkadın Kalkan, a resident of Murtuna Mahallesi. It was learned that 72-year-old Kalkan was last seen around noon and her family had started searching for her as a missing person. The elderly woman's lifeless body was taken to the Antalya Adli Tıp Kurumu morgue to determine the exact cause of death after the crime scene investigations were completed.

According to the initial examinations and crime scene identifications made by the authorities, it is estimated that the elderly woman fell victim to the accident shortly after leaving her home. It is emphasized that Kalkan's fall likely occurred at the canal only a few hundred meters away from her home, and she was then swept away by the current for four kilometers. Considering this distance, her age, and health condition, it is stated that the possibility of the woman getting out of the water on her own is extremely low. Gendarmerie and prosecutor teams have initiated the legal process by evaluating all possibilities regarding how the woman fell into the canal.

The local community drew attention to how dangerous the strong currents carried by the waters and the irrigation canals without any security measures around them can be for local residents. People living in the area emphasized that necessary precautions must be taken to prevent especially the elderly and children from falling into such waterways. This tragic incident has once again brought to the agenda the fact that the safety of open water canals in rural areas is a serious problem. Authorities are expected to take steps to install railings or hang warning signs around these canals, which are used for agricultural purposes and have abundant depth. This accident, which resulted in loss of life, highlighted the need for closer cooperation and inspection between institutions.
