Major Illegal Cigarette Operation in Aydın: 350 Kilograms of Tobacco Seized

In a successful operation conducted by security forces in the Ovaköy Mahallesi of Aydın, a blow was dealt to a gang engaged in illegal cigarette manufacturing. During the raid on an address identified as a result of intelligence work, tens of thousands of illicit cigarettes prepared for the market and tons of tobacco were seized. Four suspects, determined to be connected to the incident, were caught red-handed during the operation and taken into custody. Such operations, aimed at preventing smuggling activities, are of great importance in preventing unfair competition and the unregistered economy in the region. After their statements are taken, the suspects are expected to be referred to the courthouse.

In detailed searches of the premises by security units, a sufficient amount of materials and equipment to set up a professional production workshop were found. In particular, 2 electronic cigarette rolling machines and 5 tobacco mixing machines reveal how systematic and large-scale the operation was. Additionally, 4 compressors and a precision scale used for accurate measurements were seized inside the workshop. It is assessed that by using this equipment, tens of thousands of cigarettes could be produced daily and that these products were sold directly to the black market without ever hitting the shelves. It was stated that the equipment and materials clearly demonstrate the scale of the illicit trade.

Among the most striking materials seized in the operation were a total of 317 thousand empty cigarette tubes, 275 thousand of which bore tax stamps. The presence of stamped tubes indicates that the criminal network also harmed the state through fake documents and fraud. In addition, 42 thousand unstamped empty tubes and 35 thousand tubes filled with tobacco, waiting ready for sale, were also handed over to the security forces during the searches. The trade of fake tax stamps and empty tubes is an illegal activity that directly threatens public health. The fact that these illicitly produced products are prepared in uncontrolled environments raises the question of how unhealthy their contents might be.

The 350 kilograms of chopped tobacco prepared inside the workshop during the raid were also among the materials confiscated by the police teams. This vast amount of tobacco stock is considered the biggest proof that long-term and uninterrupted production was targeted. Where the tobacco in question was procured from and how it was transported to the workshop remain aspects of the investigation that have not yet been clarified. Authorities emphasize that if such products are smuggled into the country illegally or obtained off the books, they also cause tax losses. It was learned that the necessary legal processes have been initiated to destroy the seized massive tobacco stock.

The suspects identified as being involved in the incident, named N.E. (48), M.F. (31), M.K. (49), and M.Ö. (34), were caught red-handed and taken into custody by police teams. It was announced that the suspects, whose health checks were completed, will be referred to the courthouse after their testimonies at the police station. Authorities underline that such operations will continue uninterruptedly in order to prevent the unregistered economy and illicit trade. Despite appearing to be small-scale, this operation is interpreted as a critical step in terms of protecting state tax revenues and keeping the public away from uncontrolled products. Within the scope of the investigation file, the legal process continues at full speed to prosecute the suspects and apprehend other potential suspects.
