The forgiving aspect of Maria is not only the courage she showed but also the attitude she displayed shortly before her death. While living the final hours of her life, she stated that she forgave the person who caused her these pains and was responsible for her death. Pius canonized her in 1950, giving her the title of 'the little and sweet martyr of purity.'
