Çayırova Belediyesinin 'Atığın Sıfır Noktası' Recycled 103 Tons of Waste in 1 Year

The 'Atığın Sıfır Noktası' facility, opened last year by Çayırova Belediyesi as part of its sustainable environmental policies, achieved great success over a one-year period. Launched in July across from the Akse Kapalı Semt Pazarı, this innovative project enabled the recycling of a total of 103 tons of waste in exactly one year. This pioneering work carried out by the municipality not only contributes directly to environmental protection but also raises significant awareness among district residents. Established in line with zero waste goals, the facility makes the recycling process extremely practical and rewarding for citizens. The intense interest shown by the local community in the facilities is a clear indication that Çayırova has embraced an eco-friendly lifestyle.
Over the past one-year period, the facility managed to collect a massive amount of waste across a wide variety of categories. Looking at the distribution of the collected waste, paper and cardboard waste constitutes the largest share with 44 thousand 317 kilograms. In addition, the facility successfully integrated large volumes of recyclable materials into its system, including 26 thousand 192 kilograms of plastic waste and 22 thousand 419 kilograms of glass waste. Furthermore, 2 thousand 691 kilograms of metal and bin 767 kilograms of mixed packaging waste that cause environmental pollution were processed at these facilities. Hazardous wastes, though smaller in amount but highly harmful to nature, were not neglected either; 576 kilograms of waste batteries, 2 thousand 54 kilograms of vegetable waste oil, and 2 thousand 936 kilograms of electronic waste were safely collected and disposed of.
The most striking and effective aspect of the project on the public is undoubtedly the reward system it offers. Citizens earn points based on the type and weight of the waste they bring to the facilities, and by accumulating these points, they can request various gifts. This innovative gamification (oyunlaştırma) method has been highly effective in establishing a recycling habit, especially among children and youth. During the one-year period, Çayırovalılar became owners of technological products such as 5 tablet computers and 2 adult smart watches in exchange for their accumulated points. Additionally; outdoor and camping products such as 20 camping chairs, 15 glass tumblers, and 30 steel tea thermoses were among the distributed rewards.
The distributed rewards were not limited to technological or household items for individual use, but also included products that encourage sports and social mobility. In this context, 3 official jerseys of the Çayırova Belediyesi Basketball Team, along with 30 basketballs, 26 soccer balls, and 24 volleyballs were gifted. To contribute to mental development, 18 chess sets also took their place in the prize pool. To provide a small contribution to household economies, 12 packs of 3-kilogram dishwasher tablets and a total of 46 meal vouchers were among the other alternatives offered to citizens. This wide-ranging reward system has cemented the project's success on a cultural and social basis by ensuring the inclusion of citizens of all ages and backgrounds in recycling activities.
Officials from the Çayırova Belediyesi İklim Değişikliği ve Sıfır Atık Müdürlüğü stated that these figures are only a beginning and that their targets lie much further ahead. In the official statement made by the authorities, it was emphasized that the 'Atığın Sıfır Noktası' initiative will continue to contribute ceaselessly to recycling. This project has once again proven how vital the cooperation between local governments and the public is for building a sustainable future. Such concrete steps taken to protect natural resources, reduce carbon footprint, and hand over a clean ecosystem to future generations serve as a role model. In the coming years, it is aimed to increase the amount of waste and to elevate environmental awareness to even higher levels across the entire society.
