Construction Boss Scandal in Denmark: Defrauded Employees and Spent Company Money on Luxury

Serious allegations have come to light regarding Kenneth Martin Vang-Hansen, the head of Slot Company, which ran projects for one of Denmark's leading prefabricated housing companies. According to documents uncovered by the 3F union, Vang-Hansen financed his personal luxury lifestyle from the company's treasury while defrauding construction workers. The incident, which is also reflected in bankruptcy files, has once again exposed the dark relationships in the country's construction sector. Among the items obtained during the company's bankruptcy process, luxury hotel stays, expensive restaurant visits, and hunting equipment stand out. The situation in question raises questions not only about the abuse by a single executive but also about the lack of auditing in the sector.

At the center of the incident are the projects of Hybel, known as one of the biggest players in the prefabricated housing sector. Slot Company was operating as a subcontractor in construction projects carried out on behalf of Hybel in the North Jutland region. However, according to the 3F union, so-called foreign independent workers were employed in these projects, and a large portion of these individuals did not have a legal status. The union stated that foreign workers were used as 'fake independent workers' to bypass collective labor agreements and legal regulations regarding working hours. This situation has raised concerns about what goes on behind the scenes of prefabricated housing companies, which have billions of dollars in turnover. Hybel, on the other hand, is a company that had previously been criticized numerous times for failing to adequately audit its subcontractors.

According to the union's investigation, the situation was discovered in 2022. 3F obtained information that a group of foreign workers at various Hybel construction sites each had their own single-person companies registered in their names. Slot Company, which employed these individuals, was a business registered at an address on Strandvejen in Hellerup, a very wealthy area. However, the union claimed that the workers' independent statuses were completely fake and designed solely to exploit legal loopholes. Through this method, workers were deprived of the social rights, leave, and overtime pay that a normal salaried employee would deserve. Regarding the matter, an agreement of approximately 150.000 Danish kroner was reached between Slot Company and the union in 2023, but this money was never paid due to bankruptcy proceedings.

The details of the scandal revealed not only the victimization of the workers but also the reckless spending exhibited by the executive. When the records of the company, which went bankrupt just a few months after the agreement was reached, were examined, it emerged that Kenneth Martin Vang-Hansen used the company's revenues for his personal pleasures. Expenses entered into the bankruptcy documents include luxury holidays in castles and high-priced dinner invitations. Additionally, it was documented that the executive purchased hunting equipment from the company budget. Considering this situation alongside the non-payment of the wages the workers deserved, it caused a huge backlash. Executive Vang-Hansen, on the other hand, claims that he is a different person today and has distanced himself from his past actions.

All these events have brought up the lack of auditing and failures in the relationships between large sector companies and their subcontractors. The prefabricated housing sector is seen as a field that builds the dream homes for Danish families and has a turnover reaching billions. However, behind this beautiful facade, criminal acts such as money laundering, fake invoicing, bankruptcy abuse, and usurpation of workers' rights occasionally come to light. The 3F union announced that they are conducting a comprehensive investigation to uncover such malicious structures and are covering the entire sector as a news series. While the parent company Hybel avoided answering specific questions directed at them, it stated that all subcontractors are obliged to comply with laws and regulations. However, the recurring nature of such scandals shows that fundamental and permanent regulations must be made in the sector.
