CONTROVERSIES Over Priest Appointment in Danimarka: Minister Ida Auken's Social Media Post Draws Backlash

The celebration video that Danimarka Health and Church Minister Ida Auken posted on Instagram following the appointment of a priest to the Parliament (Folketing), sparked a widespread debate across the country. The Minister's criticism by secular circles who believe that religious and state affairs should be separated, brought the long-standing debates on the place of Christian values in politics back to the agenda. Auken's post not only created a debate over a religious symbol but also led to a deep analysis of how politicians use social media and communicate with the masses today. While on one hand it was thought that the Minister pleased her own voter base, on the other hand it was observed that opponents and even some figures within her own party were uncomfortable with the situation. Communication consultant and former strategic advisor of the Venstre party, Steffen Hjaltelin, argues that Minister Auken essentially scored an own goal with this move and went too far. According to Hjaltelin, although such posts are a part of the Minister's political identity, in the current context, they will do nothing but harm her. It is noted that showing the connection between the church and the parliament to be closer than it actually is, in a secular country like Danimarka, will disturb government partners and other figures within the Sosyal Demokrat Parti. On the other hand, White Cloud director and former campaign chief of Radikal Venstre, Henrik Kjerrumgaard, views the incident from a much more calculated and strategic perspective. According to Kjerrumgaard, Auken wants to send a deliberately noisy and attention-grabbing message to her own Sosyal Demokrat supporters. Stating that social media is a platform where everything is expressed with emotions and that the Minister wants to show her success in this way, Kjerrumgaard thinks this tactic will work on her own base. In fact, it is pointed out that this noisy communication format is also frequently used by other political actors such as former ABD President Donald Trump, Culture Minister Zenia Stampe, and former AB Commissioner Margrete Vestager. The main purpose seems to be mobilizing some people while deliberately provoking and alienating another segment.

Behind the debate lie the Sosyal Demokrat Parti's value policies and the internal conflicts regarding the place of Christianity in society. Ida Auken, who is a pastor's daughter, stands alongside Frederik Vad and Rasmus Stoklund in the faction of the party that believes Christian values should be highlighted more. While acknowledging that the practice of appointing a priest to the parliament is not a reform that will deeply change the world, Kjerrumgaard emphasizes that it is an important "symbolic politics" in Christansborg (Danimarka Parliament), much like the flag debates. Considering that Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also represents this domain of value politics, it is stated that Auken's move is unlikely to damage her position within the party. On the contrary, she is thought to have succeeded in drawing significant support from voters who find the defense of Christian values important.

As a result, both communication experts agree that the Minister's celebration video inside the vehicle was not an entirely spontaneous event. The fact that the Minister is currently on vacation and the ministry refuses to share details about the video increases suspicions that the incident is part of a planned communication strategy. Experts, noting that images from politicians on social media are no longer spontaneous in any way and are entirely based on exhibiting emotional behavior, emphasize that symbolic propositions are celebrated with great force. It is predicted that as long as voters do not punish such posts, politicians will continue to use these noisy and polarizing communication methods that appeal to algorithms. This incident strikingly reveals how the power of modern political communication and social media algorithms shapes traditional political debates.
