Diego Forlan Takes Charge of the Uruguay National Team

Famous former footballer Diego Forlan has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Uruguay Senior National Football Team. With the decision announced by Uruguayan Football Federation President Ignacio Alonso, it was reported that the 47-year-old Forlan will also be responsible for the development of the U-20 youth national team as part of grassroots efforts in the country.

This significant change in duty came after Uruguay's poor performance, failing to advance past the group stage in the 2026 World Cup. Following the results of the said tournament, the resignation of previous head coach Marcelo Bielsa had come to the agenda. Forlan was given the task of carrying out a generational change and rebuilding the system within the national team.

Forlan, whose contract is valid until March 2027, will have his most important goal as bringing Uruguay back to the top ranks in South American and world football. Forlan had previously managed Uruguayan clubs Peñarol and Atenas for short periods, and this was recorded as his first major experience at the national team level.
