'Historic' Cocaine Bust in El Salvador: 6,68 Tons Seized

El Salvador's security forces presented to the public a massive cocaine bust carried out in haziran, described as one of the largest operations in the country's history. This operation, in which a drug shipment of approximately 6,68 tons was seized, was defined by state authorities as a 'historic blow.' The street value of the aforementioned drugs is estimated to be around 167 million dollars. This large quantity of cocaine was successfully intercepted by the Salvadoran National Navy while being transported by sea. As part of the operation, six suspects, mostly foreign nationals, who carried out the transportation were also detained at the scene.

Among the detained suspects are four Kolombiya and two Ekvador citizens, revealing that the incident is based on an international criminal network. The detained individuals and tons of drugs were displayed at a press conference held at the La Concordia Port in the La Paz region, approximately seventy kilometers from the capital, San Salvador. Authorities announced that these suspects will be brought to justice and that a process has been initiated to ensure they receive the harshest penalties under the country's drug control laws. Salvadoran Minister of Security Gustavo Villatoro emphasized that this success was achieved as a result of his government's determined fight against criminal organizations. Villatoro also stated that for the past seven years, security units have been delivering uninterrupted and heavy blows to such criminal organizations.

Minister Villatoro, in his statement, also expressed his appreciation for the regional drug policies of Amerika Birleşik Devletleri President Donald Trump. He stated that Trump's vision and determined stance on the issue have encouraged other countries in the continent to contribute to this global fight. He added to his words that in the past El Salvador fought this battle alone, but now the situation has changed and other nations have joined the ranks. In this context, the fact that El Salvador President Nayib Bukele also hailed the operation as the hardest blow in the country's history demonstrates the government's persistence in its antidrogas strategy. Considering that a similar amount was seized in Şubat, it is evident that El Salvador has applied unprecedented pressure against drug cartels in recent months.

The amount of drugs seized by El Salvador's security units throughout 2025 has reached record levels compared to previous years. According to official data, a total of over 25 tons of drugs—mostly cocaine—were seized this year, with a financial value exceeding 618,7 million dollars. In 2024, 17,2 tons of drugs were seized, and their value was calculated to be approximately 422,7 million dollars. These increasing figures highlight the country's role as a transit point while also proving that the operational capacity of the security forces is increasing day by day. As noted in the 2025 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report by the ABD Dışişleri Bakanlığı, intensive road inspections are now forcing smugglers to operate in open seas.

As part of regional cooperation, El Salvador, its surrounding countries, and approximately twenty nations from the Caribbean have come together to form a joint front against drug cartels. At the inaugural conference held in Mart in Miami, named 'America Against Cartels,' a memorandum of understanding was signed to globally combat 'narco-terrorism.' Speaking on behalf of the ABD, Savaş Sekreteri Pete Hegseth stated that this agreement safeguards the common interests of stakeholders in the Western Hemisphere and launches an all-out war against criminal networks. Thanks to this cooperation agreement, it is aimed to continuously increase intelligence sharing and joint maritime operations between states. All these developments indicate that the risks posed by Central America's role as a drug transit corridor are being attempted to be mitigated through international solidarity and joint security policies.
