Dark Days for South Korean Football: Executives Resign One After Another and Leave the Country

South Korean football is being shaken by a deep managerial crisis following the massive disappointment at the 2026 Kuzey Amerika Dünya Kupası. The disastrous results achieved by the national team in the group stage and their early elimination were considered not just a sporting failure, but also an indication of a systematic collapse. Following these shameful results, high-ranking officials, notably Güney Kore Devlet Başkanı Lee Jae-myung, made statements via social media, emphasizing the urgent need for reform in sports management. Former head coach Hong Myung-bo, seen as the main culprit of the crisis, took responsibility for the poor performance and resigned, flying to the ABD shortly after to be with his family. Hong's departure from the country was just the first step in the disappearance of executives who wanted to escape the ongoing scandals.

The foundations of this chaos were actually laid in Temmuz 2024, following the dismissal of Jürgen Klinsmann. The process of appointing Hong Myung-bo to replace the dismissed head coach had been marred by serious allegations of corruption and nepotism from the very beginning. According to the allegations, former Technical Director Lee Im-saeng, who did not have the authority to select a head coach, exceeded his authority by interfering in the process and irregularly appointing Hong to the position. During this scandalous process, it was also revealed that former Güney Kore Futbol Federasyonu Başkanı Chung Mong-gyu broke the rules by being overly involved in Klinsmann's hiring. These corruption and favoritism allegations grew so massive that the trio in question had to testify at an audit session held in the national assembly.

During the aforementioned parliamentary session, Lee Im-saeng argued that following the resignation of the former Reinforcement Committee Chairman, all authority was transferred to him, and that he convinced and appointed Hong Myung-bo entirely on his own initiative. However, his breaking down in tears while making these statements and subsequently announcing his resignation only caused more public outrage. Despite his dramatic resignation, it was thought that Lee had completely severed ties with the football world; however, this was not the case. It was revealed that he continued to serve as a full-time instructor for the Kore Futbol Federasyonu until Eylül 2025. Furthermore, it was recently discovered that he was continuing his managerial role at a football academy, a situation that exposed the flaws in a system that allows resigning executives to remain close to their former positions without any sanctions.

Consequently, rather than completely retreating behind closed doors, Lee Im-saeng chose to continue his career abroad with a new and prestigious role. Kamboçya'nın Nagaworld kulübü announced via its official social media accounts that it had appointed Lee as the club's new head coach, entrusting him with all football operations. This development marks Lee's return to the pitch exactly five years after leaving his head coaching position at the Suwon Samsung club in 2020. All these events show that football executives involved in corruption and scandal allegations in Güney Kore continue to infiltrate institutions in other countries rather than being held accountable. With Hong Myung-bo going to the ABD, Lee Im-saeng moving to Kamboçya, and Federation President Chung resigning and ending his 13-year tenure, the three main figures of the scandal left their country and institutions without facing any punishment.

The Güney Kore Ulusal Meclisi Kültür, Spor ve Turizm Komitesi is preparing for a comprehensive hearing for the federation in order to shed light on these scandals and hold those involved accountable. However, more permanent steps need to be taken to repair this massive collapse in football management and restore public trust. In this regard, the 'K-Futbol İnovasyon Komitesi', co-chaired by FIFA Komisyonu üyesi Park Ji-sung and Kore Spor Konseyi Başkanı Yoo Seung-min, was officially established in recent days. This temporary innovation committee will be responsible for determining the future vision of South Korean football, which has been devastated by favoritism and inept appointments. This committee, which will serve until a new management structure is established for the federation, aims to ensure the rapid implementation of necessary reforms by putting all sporting and administrative issues on the table.
