Official inflation data for June released by the Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK) has once again brought to light the dramatic divergence in food prices. A detailed analysis based on Tüketici Fiyat Endeksi (TÜFE) data revealed that sharp increases and decreases were seen side by side in items directly affecting consumers' purchasing power. In particular, price changes in vegetable and fruit groups followed a highly volatile course due to seasonal conditions and supply-demand imbalances, which was clearly reflected on supermarket shelves. The data showed that while some products strained the budgets of citizens heading to the market, others allowed for relatively more affordable shopping.

In terms of price increases, the champion of price hikes in June was the fresh fruits category. According to TÜİK data, the other fresh fruits group saw an astronomical increase of 54,26 percent compared to the previous month. This rate sat at the top of the list, followed by a record rise of 44,55 percent observed in the tuberous vegetables group. Another prominent group on the list was fresh or chilled vegetables, including products such as onions, garlic, carrots, and olives; prices in this category also rose by 17,35 percent. Fresh citrus fruits, one of the essentials of the summer months, saw a 12,85 percent increase, canned fish products rose by 8,05 percent, and ice cream and frozen sherbets, the consumption of which increases especially on hot days, recorded a price increase of 6,27 percent.

However, the most striking and positive picture in June's data was the price drops seen in fresh vegetables. The product group that became the most affordable last month was fresh or chilled vegetables with edible fruits, such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and zucchini. Prices in this group declined by 37,64 percent compared to the previous month, bringing a smile to citizens' faces. This was followed by a 24,80 percent decrease in the green leafy and stem vegetables group and a 14,21 percent retreat in fresh green legumes. The sharp declines seen in fresh vegetable groups helped prices in markets settle as products began to grow with the warming weather and the increase in supply.

In non-food items, developments in the transportation sector drew particular attention. While changes occurred in travel plans with the approaching summer holiday season, prices for air passenger transportation services to abroad fell by 8,96 percent. This meant a slight decrease in costs for citizens wishing to go abroad, while a similar improvement was observed in road transportation. The drop in fuel prices lowered costs for both personal and commercial transport; prices in the other fuels group for personal transport vehicles decreased by 6,29 percent, while a 4,40 percent drop was recorded in diesel (mazot) prices. These data show that fluctuations in international oil prices and the currency effect are reflected in budgets through fuel supply.

In summary, TÜİK’s June data clearly depicted the changes in the spending habits of the smallest unit in economic life. While consumers felt the pressure of sharp rises in fresh fruit and tuberous vegetable prices within the basic foodstuffs category, they also saw positive effects from the cheapening of green vegetables, a staple of dining tables. In non-food expenditures, positive price movements in the transportation sector were recorded as a refreshing development, especially for holidaymakers and vehicle owners. This integrated dataset reveals that inflation is not just a general numbers game, and that price imbalances across different product groups create deep impacts on the daily lives of citizens.
