Double Murder of Two Individuals by the Roadside in Kolombiya: The Veil of Unsolved Mystery

A shocking incident occurred on Kolombiya's road between Kúcuta and San Faustino, at noon on Sunday, 5 July. Passing drivers found two bodies in the El Porvenir area, approximately four kilometers from the Model Cezaevi. The deceased were identified as 36-year-old Luis Carlos Velandia Villamizar and 25-year-old Junior Rafael Muñoz González. It was reported that both individuals were killed by firearms and authorities launched a large-scale investigation into the circumstances of the incident. While this tragic event brought the issue of violence in the region back to the agenda, it was announced that investigations continue to shed light on the unsolved murders.

The scene at the crime scene was devastating; Luis Carlos's body was lying on the asphalt with multiple bullet wounds visible on him. Initial examinations suggested that long-range weapons might have been used in the attack. A few meters away from him, by the side of the road, the body of Junior Rafael Muñoz was found. Although there was not much blood on his clothes, the examination confirmed that he was also killed by a firearm. Due to the security conditions at the crime scene, police teams could not enter the area immediately, which delayed the removal of the bodies. Authorities sent the bodies to the Adli Tıp institution using a hearse in accordance with security protocols.

Relatives of Luis Carlos stated that he was known as 'Luis Visajes' on social media, sharing photos taken with luxury vehicles and gold chains. He was seen proudly showcasing his trips to San Faustino with convoys of vehicles and his travels abroad. However, behind this shiny image, his criminal record was also striking; he was caught in 2014 for carrying potassium chlorate, which is used in the making of explosives. Junior, on the other hand, drew a much quieter profile on social media, sharing photos of weapons and jewelry on the internet rather than displaying his own life. These contrasting profiles provided important clues for authorities to understand the motivation behind the incident.

This tragic event became the second major loss that deeply shook the Velandia family, as Luis Carlos's brother, Manuel Velandia Villamizar, was also killed about two years ago. A few days before his murder, Luis Carlos shared a video on social media visiting his brother's grave, expressing how much he missed him. Manuel lost his life in an incident called the 'Los Chelicos Katliamı', which resulted in the deaths of four people and took place at the Chaparral crossing between Villa del Rosario and Los Patios on 27 June 2024. This new tragedy of the family revealed how widespread organized crime groups and armed conflicts are in the region.

While the family now prepares for another farewell with their loved one, investigation teams meticulously examine the evidence collected from the crime scene. Researchers are trying to identify potential suspects by thoroughly examining both victims' past records and social circles. Authorities are evaluating all possibilities to understand whether the murders were a robbery attempt or a deeper criminal organization showdown. While the San Faustino road is once again stained with blood due to this incident, local people are calling authorities to duty regarding ensuring their security.
