The change of 'megye' signs to 'vármegye' (county) in Hungary led to a billion-expense

The process of reverting the name of local administrations back to 'megye' (district) in Hungary has brought an unexpected financial burden and administrative chaos. During the transition to the 'vármegye' (county) designation nationwide in 2023, a large portion of the old district signs removed were recycled or used for other purposes by the state road management institution, Magyar Közút. This means that if the name change is reversed, the old signs cannot be reinstalled.

Authorities announced that the cost required to reproduce and replace approximately 589 district boundary signs would be around 50 million forints. While this high expenditure reignited debates on waste in the public sector, various solution proposals also came to the agenda regarding the issue. For instance, some MPs, such as Magyar Péter, suggested sticking materials or stickers covering the word 'vár' (county) on existing signs as a more economical solution.

However, in a statement made by Magyar Közút, it was stated that such a material application is not technically possible under the current rules regarding road signage and traffic regulations. It was emphasized that the signs must be completely replaced to ensure driving safety and compliance with standards. This administrative necessity prevented the waste incurred due to the recycling of the signs from being seen as a preventative measure.

The financial breakdown of the name changes and sign processes was deepened by the experiences of 2023. In that period, an appropriation of 36 million forints was allocated from the state treasury for the acceptance of the name 'vármegye' and the replacement of signs. However, the costs were not limited to physical signs; an additional 16 million forints had to be spent to update election software and systems due to the new naming.

In total, more than 52 million forints of public resources were spent for just these seemingly simple name change operations. Now, it has emerged that a similar process needs to be experienced again with almost the same costs. The fact that old signs became waste and new production became mandatory created serious question marks regarding the effective use of public resources and the financial consequences of administrative decisions. The situation laid bare the concrete costs brought by the reversal of political decisions.
