Response from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar to the University Tax Exemption Controversy

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim categorically denied allegations that the government misled the public regarding the tax exemption status of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT). The Prime Minister asserted that the promised ten-year tax exemption extension was granted and remains unchanged. Contrary to the claims, he stated that the three-year period mentioned in a letter sent by the Ministry of Finance served an entirely different purpose. This controversy has sparked a widespread debate in the country, particularly over educational policies and government transparency. The incident marks a period of increasing tension between the opposition and the ruling party in Malaysian politics.

According to the statement made by the Prime Minister, the three-year period mentioned in the Ministry of Finance's letter is not directly related to the university's tax exemption period. Anwar emphasized that this three-year period merely represents the requirement for the university to submit its audited financial statements. It was noted that under subsection 44(6) of the Income Tax Act of 1967, such reports are requested to ensure the financial transparency of institutions. The Prime Minister stated that the timeframe granted for submitting these reports should not be confused with the continuation period of the tax exemption. He clearly stated that the ten-year tax exemption decision remains unchanged and is still valid. Government officials argue that this is merely a standard legal procedure.

The figure who ignited the controversy was Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong, President of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). Wee claimed that a letter published by the Ministry of Finance this month indicated that the tax exemption was extended for only three more years, contrary to the promised ten-year period. This claim was interpreted by the opposition as the government acting inconsistently towards educational institutions. Wee's statements caused serious concerns regarding the university's future financial situation and the quality of education provided to students. TAR UMT is a well-established institution in Malaysia known for providing quality and affordable private higher education. The fear that the institution's revenue sources could be harmed created anxiety among parents and academics.

Anwar Ibrahim expressed his remarks on the matter during an event held in Johor Bahru. Speaking at the YOK Merahkan Johor Undi Harapan program held in Taman Pelangi Indah, the Prime Minister reiterated the government's determination to ensure access to education for people from all walks of life. He emphasized the importance of the issue by stating that existing regulations could be amended in favor of educational institutions if necessary. Dr. Maszlee Malik and Muhammad Faezuddin Mohd Puad, whom Pakatan Harapan nominated for the Puteri Wangsa and Kempas state seats, also accompanied him at the event. Anwar also admitted that he initially refrained from responding to the matter publicly to avoid escalating the controversy further. However, he stated that he felt the need to reveal the truth as the claims spread.

Meanwhile, government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil made an important statement on the matter on Wednesday. Fahmi confirmed that the Cabinet thoroughly discussed the issue and approved a 10-year tax exemption extension for TAR UMT. It was reported that the underlying reason for this decision is the university's significant role in providing quality private education across the country. Officials stated that the government will continue to support educational institutions and encourage the financial strengthening of similar establishments. The incident raised public awareness regarding the importance of not confusing tax legislation with educational policies. It is argued that this step taken by the government demonstrates the value given to educational institutions serving different ethnic communities in the country.
