The Energía Costa Azul terminal, located in the Ensenada city of Meksika's Baja California state, has carried out the country's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment exported from its Pacific coasts. In a statement made by Sempra Infrastructure, the developer of the project, it was noted that this shipment was evaluated as a significant milestone in the testing processes before the start of commercial operations. This development stands out as a concrete indicator that Meksika's role in global energy trade is gradually strengthening. The country aims to become a critical bridge that will deliver North American natural gas to world markets by utilizing its geographical advantages. Officials emphasize that this step is highly strategic for regional energy integration.

In the international conjuncture coinciding with the period when the shipment in question took place, the issue of energy security has once again settled at the top of the global agenda. The increasing political and military tensions around the Hürmüz Boğazı throughout this year once again revealed how fragile one of the most critical maritime routes of global energy trade is. According to data from the Birleşik Devletler Enerji Bilgi İdaresi, in 2024, approximately twenty percent of the world's LNG trade passed through this narrow waterway. These striking statistics clearly reveal that energy-importing countries and governments have accelerated their efforts to diversify supply routes. These concerns and alternative supply searches are addressed as a central topic in energy security discussions of G7 countries.

Considering all this global background, the Energía Costa Azul LNG Faz 1 project represents a massive leap for Meksika. The terminal in question fills a regional gap by providing Meksika with new and large LNG export capacity on its Pacific coast. Sempra Infrastructure officials state that the main goal of the project is to efficiently bring together the abundant natural gas supply produced in North America with global energy markets. Adrian Duhalt, a researcher from the Texas-Meksiko Merkezi, states that Meksika's biggest advantage is its extraordinary geographical proximity compared to its competitors. According to Duhalt, the country attracts investment not only through its proximity to production basins in the USA, but also through its ability to directly access Asia's giant energy markets from the northern Pacific coasts.

Meksika's rise on the global LNG map actually started last year with steps taken on the Meksika Körfezi coast. The Fast LNG Altamira project officially started LNG exports from the country in 2024, creating an important precedent in this field. Within the scope of the project in question, in october of 2024, the first LNG export from Meksika to Europe was carried out with a shipment going from Altamira to the Gate terminal in Hollanda. This event went on record as a concrete proof that a new and safe trade route opening to the Atlantik Okyanusu was successfully initiated. Experts state that the value of the Altamira project is not only limited to the exported volume; it also proves that Meksika can successfully integrate into the global LNG supply chain by accessing cheap American gas.

Meksika is progressing with firm steps towards becoming a strategic global gas exporter with the modern infrastructure projects it develops on both coasts. While the Fast LNG Altamira project opens the door to Europe, the Energía Costa Azul terminal forms the second giant export line targeting Asian markets. However, the country's future energy goals do not seem to be limited to just these two giant terminals. Various new projects, such as Amigo LNG planned in the Puerto Libertad region of the Sonora state, also aim to fully evaluate Meksika's geographical position and its deep infrastructure connection to North America. As a result of all these massive investments, even though it is not a major natural gas producer itself, Meksika is consolidating its position as a critical power securing global energy supply and an energy bridge between North America and the world.
