Air Quality 'Bad' in Meksiko: High Health Risk Warning for Citizens

According to recent reports, air quality in Meksika's capital, Meksiko City (CDMX), and the surrounding Meksika Eyaleti (Edomex) is measured at a 'Bad' level. Data updated hourly by the Atmospheric Monitoring Department reveals that this poses a 'High' health risk for residents in the area. It is of great importance that citizens, especially vulnerable groups and those planning to engage in outdoor activities, take this situation into account. The deteriorating air quality is prompting authorities to take environmental measures and consider extraordinary restrictions. Residents of the region must consider these risks while carrying on with their daily lives.

This situation is supported by detailed data from 16 different monitoring stations in Meksiko City and 13 in Meksika Eyaleti. According to the stations' records, air quality has been reported as 'Bad' in many major districts such as Coyoacán, Iztacalco, Venustiano Carranza, Iztapalapa, and Tláhuac. Conversely, while air quality remains at a 'Good' level in areas like Cuautitlán Izcalli and Nezahualcóyotl, no data could be obtained from some districts like Azcapotzalco and Álvaro Obregón due to station maintenance. These variations reveal that air pollution is not homogeneously distributed across the city and that local factors play a significant role. Additionally, the UV index reaching level 4 has highlighted the need for those going outside to wear hats, UV-filtering sunglasses, and high-protection factor sunscreen.

Authorities are trying to raise public awareness by issuing a series of preventive measures and recommendations against this negative outlook. In this context, it is noted that Environmental Emergency plans and restrictions such as 'Doble Hoy No Circula' aimed at reducing vehicle traffic could be activated. Such measures aim to reduce the concentration of harmful particles in the atmosphere, especially during periods when pollution peaks. Authorities also strongly recommend limiting outdoor activities to minimize the negative health impacts of air pollution. It is of vital importance that at-risk groups, particularly those with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly, strictly adhere to these warnings.

Meksika's air pollution problem is considered not only a matter of daily measures but also a deep structural and environmental issue. According to the 2024 Global Air Quality Report prepared by IQAir, Meksika is one of the most polluted countries in Latin America in terms of fine particulate (PM2.5) concentration. The report reveals that PM2.5 pollution in the country is approximately 3.5 times the annual reference value recommended by the World Health Organization (DSÖ). It has been noted that Meksiko City, slightly surpassing Şili's capital Santiago, has become one of the most polluted metropolises in the region. This data indicates an urgent need for long-term and radical environmental policies to achieve clean air standards in the country's major cities.

PM2.5, a fine particulate matter originating from vehicles, factories, and combustion processes, is identified as the primary culprit behind this pollution. These microscopic particles, produced by factors such as vehicle exhausts, industrial facilities, and poor fuel quality, consist of a mixture of chemicals, dust, soot, and metals. The greatest danger is that these particles are so small they cannot be seen with the naked eye and can directly enter the bloodstream through the lungs. Once in the bloodstream, these toxic substances lay the groundwork for severe health issues, ranging from respiratory diseases to cardiovascular problems. In major industrial and population centers like Monterrey and Meksiko City, this situation has become an unsustainable threat to public health.
