Latest Status of Fondo Basile and Fondo Saccà Housing Projects in Messina

Significant developments are taking place within the scope of urban renewal and housing works carried out in the city of Messina, Italy. The commissionership structure established by the regional government is managing a comprehensive construction process to move families who previously lived in tent cities into permanent housing. In this context, intensive work is being carried out for the construction of a total of 92 new housing units in the Fondo Basile and Fondo Saccà areas. According to the latest bulletins published by the Messina Municipality Recovery Office, both projects are progressing in accordance with the planned schedule. These steps aimed at solving the housing problem of the local population are expected to significantly raise the standards of social life in the city.

Work continues for the construction of a total of 60 new housing units in the Fondo Basile and Fondo De Pasquale areas. In this residential complex project, which will consist of three structurally independent buildings, 80 percent of the structural construction has been completed. The works are planned to be completely finished by the end of this September, and the overall progress is expected to reach the 35 percent level. Thanks to the modern X LAM technology used, the flooring of the third floor of the four-story buildings has been completed, and the focus is currently on the construction of the top floor. While the housing units are designed in different sizes such as 45, 75, and 95 square meters, an indoor parking area of 18 square meters will be allocated for each apartment. The construction works of the project, which started in November 2025, are aimed to be completed in February 2027 and to have high earthquake and energy efficiency standards.

In the project in the Fondo Saccà area, preparations for the construction of 32 new housing units continue at full speed. Within the scope of this project, which covers an area of approximately 5,250 square meters, it is aimed to meet the housing needs of approach 67 households that previously lived in tent cities. Following the handover of the area last June, the establishment of the construction site was started immediately, and the foundation excavation processes have been completed. The pouring of the reinforced concrete foundations has been largely completed, and the assembly of the superstructure elements required to raise the buildings is about to begin. This project, which centers on environmental sustainability, is planned to be completed in a 277-day process with a budget of approximately six million euros and to be delivered in the spring of 2027.

In addition to these two major construction projects, serious steps are also being taken for the renovation of existing buildings. Thanks to the comprehensive renovation works managed by the commissionership office, 23 apartments have been delivered to their rightful owners within the last month after the completion of maintenance and repair operations. Just this week, comprehensive renovation and maintenance processes were completed in 15 apartment buildings located in the ArisMe area and presented to the use of families. In these housing units, where families coming from tent cities will be placed, 14 different construction companies are working in joint coordination. Renovation activities carried out in a wide range, from the replacement of windows to the repair of electrical, water, and air conditioning installations, bring the living standards of the interiors to modern levels.

All these urban transformation projects show that the Italian government and local administrations are following a decisive policy to permanently solve the housing crisis in Messina. The innovative construction technologies and eco-friendly approaches used ensure that the new housing units not only meet the need for shelter but also offer safe living spaces for the future. The progress of the works on the planned timeline strengthens the hopes that the real estate and housing crisis, which has been going on in the region for years, will ease in the near future. With the successful completion of the projects, the face of the city will change, and the possibility of living in tent cities will completely disappear.
