Microsoft is laying off 4.800 employees globally

Technology giant Microsoft has officially announced that it is initiating a massive layoff process affecting 4.800 employees, which corresponds to approximately 2.1 percent of its global workforce. One of the biggest victims of these comprehensive layoffs across the company is the popular gaming brand Xbox. Company officials stated that these personnel reductions in the gaming division are actually just a part of a larger restructuring plan. It was expressed that the main purpose of this structural change is to essentially "reset" the Xbox unit under increasing competitive pressures. The announcements made on Monday caused a huge repercussion in the technology and gaming worlds, raising concerns across the industry.

It was announced that the number of mass layoffs in the Xbox unit is exactly 1.600, and this figure is expected to increase in the upcoming periods. The company plans to lay off an additional 1.600 employees in the gaming division during the new fiscal year that started last week. During this process, it was reported that four different video game development studios previously acquired by Microsoft will be separated from the company and made independent. It was emphasized that all these steps were taken to fix the financial structure of the gaming division and increase operational efficiency. Developers and industry professionals believe that these structural changes will directly affect Xbox's future game portfolio.

Asha Sharma, the new CEO of the gaming division, clearly admitted in a confidential memo sent to employees that the current situation is unsustainable. Sharma stated, "Our business is not in a healthy position today and we operate with significantly lower profit margins, between 3 to 10 times lower, compared to similar platform and publishing businesses." Meanwhile, Xbox is waging a relentless battle against strong competitors like Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's Switch. Sharma expressed that the gaming industry is facing a full-blown "hardware crisis" and that the costs of console components are constantly increasing exorbitantly. These rising production expenses are making it increasingly impossible to keep game consoles as profitable hardware.

These Xbox-specific cuts constitute just a portion of the broader wave of layoffs across Microsoft. Amy Coleman, the company's Chief Human Resources Officer, stated that other personnel reductions at the tech giant are attributed to various uncertain changes in customer needs and market dynamics. However, Coleman also unequivocally put an end to a rumor circulating among employees that caused anxiety. In a statement written in a blog post, she attempted to alleviate concerns by saying, "I also want to clarify that the positions eliminated today will not be filled by artificial intelligence technologies." This statement somewhat allayed growing global concerns regarding artificial intelligence taking over the workforce.

Another significant factor behind the layoff decisions was the voluntary separation programs previously initiated by the company. In May, Microsoft offered various incentives and financial compensation to approximately 8.750 employees, providing them with the opportunity to voluntarily retire or resign. According to Coleman's current statement on Monday, more than 30 percent of the personnel eligible for this program gladly accepted the voluntary separation offer. Company management argued that following this voluntary process, mandatory layoffs were still inevitable to achieve financial targets. Experts predict that such large-scale restructuring moves are a reflection of the general contraction trend in the technology sector, and similar trends may be observed in different companies by the end of the year.
