Movistar Plus+ Increases Its Investments for 26 Spanish Series Annually

Spanish television and streaming platform Movistar Plus+ is radically restructuring its strategy towards local productions following changes in the senior management of its fiction content department. The company plans to double its current original production volume by announcing its goal of producing 26 Spanish series per year over the next three years. This ambitious growth plan includes both increasing the number of the platform's own original content and implementing new collaboration models. Content Director Juan Andrés García Ropero states that this new era is a significant step for Spanish fiction. The company aims to offer more stories to its subscribers while simultaneously deepening its strategic partnerships with Spanish production companies and creators.

A noticeable change of direction in the platform's new strategy also draws attention, as significant revisions occurred within the team following the dismissal of Ficción and Entertainment Director Domingo Corral in 2025. With the departure of names such as Guillermo Farré, responsible for Spanish cinema, and producer Fran Araújo alongside Corral, the roadmap was completely redrawn. The new management has set brand new targets not only to increase the number of content but also to enhance production diversity. In this context, the annual number of original Movistar Plus+ productions, currently 8, is expected to increase to 16. Thus, the platform aims to provide an uninterrupted flow of content to its subscribers by premiering an average of two new local series every month.

In addition to the vision of doubling the number of local original productions, the platform is also emphasizing its strategy of acquiring series from outside. The method of acquiring rights allows the company to expand its library at lower costs and offer productions of various genres to the audience. Planning to reach a wider audience in this way, Movistar Plus+ is adding high-quality Spanish series produced by other national broadcasting platforms to its portfolio. Among these acquisitions are notable productions such as 'Ella, maldita alma', '33 días', and 'La casa nostra' created by different media organizations. This step aims to further consolidate the strength of Spanish fiction in the industry while diversifying the platform's content slate.

One of the most important pillars of the company's growth plan is increasing the number of international co-productions. Movistar Plus+ aims to optimize its budget and undertake larger-scale projects by signing projects with international partners while retaining broadcasting rights domestically. In this context, successful collaborations with France-based ARTE France continue, and new series such as 'Matar a un oso' will be broadcast as co-productions. Furthermore, the international series 'Patagonia', which has started filming in southern Chile and the Basque Region, stands out as a concrete reflection of this strategy. This project, co-starring Itziar Ituño, famous for 'La casa de papel', reveals the platform's production power and vision on a global scale.

In line with these new and ambitious targets set, the casts of the highly anticipated productions that audiences will see on screen in 2027 are gradually being revealed. 'Ardora', directed by Jorge Coira and starring Carolina Yuste and Javier Gutiérrez, is a significant part of this exciting project slate. 'Todo lo necesario', created by Marcel Barrena and Alberto Marini, and 'Iruña 97', starring Clara Galle and Álvaro Cervantes, will also meet the audience in the new era. In addition, it was announced that the second seasons of popular series such as 'Se tiene que morir mucha gente', 'El Centro', and 'El otro mundo (El otro lado)' will be arriving. Intensive negotiations held with nearly 60 production companies and the hundreds of new ideas presented in recent weeks prove that Movistar Plus+ maintains its ambitious position in the Spanish television world.
