Paragliding Pilots in Ölüdeniz Halt Flights Over Their Demands

Paragliding pilots operating in Ölüdeniz have decided to halt flights to draw attention to chronic issues awaiting a solution for a long time. In a statement made on behalf of the Ölüdeniz Paragliding Pilots Cooperative, it was stated that the difficulties faced by the sector have become unbearable. In the statement made by cooperative spokesperson Gani Arslan, it was emphasized that paragliding is not only about the pilots, but it is also one of the most important locomotives of Fethiye tourism. However, the fact that the problems voiced for years and expected to be solved by the authorities have still not been addressed has driven the pilots to take this silent action. The pilots clearly stated that the purpose of this decision is neither to harm tourism nor to victimize the guests visiting the region, but rather to secure the future of flight activities in Babadağ.

Unplanned growth and uncontrolled competition top the list of the biggest problems the sector is facing. Inspection issues, especially increasing costs and infrastructure deficiencies, are dragging businesses into a serious impasse. Particularly, the fact that some businesses sell at prices well below sustainable flight rates completely disrupts the market balance, putting other businesses in a difficult situation as well. In addition, the daily increase in insurance, taxes, transfers, and general operating expenses gradually increases the economic pressure on pilots and company owners. When all these economic and structural problems combine, it becomes almost impossible for the sector to survive in the long term. The pilots argue that urgent measures must be taken to break this cycle and create a fair competitive environment.

The natural beauty and favorable weather conditions of Babadağ have made it a world-renowned paragliding center. However, in order to preserve and better utilize this potential, it is essential that the physical infrastructure be upgraded to international standards. The pilots demand that the runways in Babadağ be rearranged in accordance with global norms and that safety standards be increased. Making the roads leading to the runways safe is of great importance in terms of preventing accidents and facilitating transportation. A second ambulance providing continuous and uninterrupted service in the region is also among the demands of vital importance. It is emphasized that this health infrastructure must be completed as soon as possible to ensure rapid response in any emergency that may occur in the region.

It is believed that physical improvements alone will not be enough to solve this crisis, and that sector representatives must also be integrated into the management. The pilots want to have a say in the decisions regarding the future of Babadağ and demand to be included in the decision-making processes.
