Decline in petrol and diesel prices, increase in kerosene in Pakistan

With the Pakistan Government's latest revision to petroleum product prices, it aims to provide limited financial relief to drivers and the transport sector by reducing petrol and high-octane diesel (HSD) prices. Under the new regulation, the price per litre of petrol was reduced by 1.97 Rupees to 297.53 Rupees, and the price of high speed diesel (HSD) was also cut by the same amount, 1.97 Rupees, bringing it to 309.50 Rupees. These price reductions will create a slight improvement in fuel expenses for commercial enterprises relying on passenger transportation and road logistics, primarily private vehicle owners and commercial transport operators. However, the government's decision to increase the price of kerosene by 4.09 Rupees per litre during the same period is being recorded as a development that will strain low-income households who rely on this fuel for their basic needs.

According to the official notification approved and published by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the price of a litre of kerosene was raised from 227.05 Rupees to 231.14 Rupees. Rural residents, particularly those living in areas where the natural gas grid is absent or insufficient and who depend on kerosene for basic energy needs such as heating, lighting, and cooking, are among the groups that will be most affected by these hikes. This increase in kerosene prices will create an additional burden on the monthly budgets of low-income families and small businesses struggling with the cost of living, potentially deepening income inequality. With the increased tariffs effective immediately, these new figures will remain in force until the government's next bi-weekly periodic price review.
