Students Traveling in the Open Bed of a Milk Truck in Peru Injured in an Accident

In the Arequipa region of Peru, nine students who were forced to travel in the open bed of a milk truck to get to school due to a lack of public transportation were injured when the vehicle overturned. The students, who study at the primary and secondary school levels at the Virgen del Carmen educational institution, had set out on Friday morning to attend classes at kilometer 177 of the Arequipa-Puquina highway, in the Pampa de Uzuña section. The accident, which endangered the lives of the students, once again highlighted the inadequacy of the transportation infrastructure in the region. Among the injured students were multiple children of primary and secondary school age, and the severity of the situation necessitated their hospitalization. The incident painted a concerning picture regarding the dangers students in rural areas endure every day to access their right to education.

The injured children come from the rural settlements of La Candelaria, Agua Buena, and Nuevo San José, located in the Polobaya district. These students are forced to travel every day to their schools in the Talamolle community of the Puquina district in the Moquegua region, due to the absence of public transportation services in their own areas. Due to the transportation problem, students are forced to take a dangerous journey by cramming into the open bed of a pickup truck carrying dairy products. This situation stands out as a chronic problem that the local community has been facing for years and awaiting a solution for. The indifference of the authorities to this issue causes the children to come face to face with death every day.

Nayely Apaza, the sister of the students involved in the accident, stated that her siblings, Daniel and Estéfany Apaza, were hospitalized and receiving treatment after the crash. The young woman expressed that students are forced to travel in the open beds of pickup trucks due to the lack of public transportation vehicles in the region. This statement revealed how helpless the local community is regarding transportation and how concerned they are about the safety of their children. Families emphasize at every opportunity that they demand an urgent solution so their children can commute to and from school safely. It is stressed that authorities must take immediate action to prevent similar accidents from happening again.

According to initial information obtained, a mechanical failure is suspected to have occurred in the pickup truck transporting dairy products, which was identified with the license plate X3E-908. This malfunction caused the driver to completely lose control of the vehicle, ultimately resulting in the truck rolling onto its side. The vehicle was found overturned by the side of the road, having sustained heavy damage, and significant material damage was also observed. The driver behind the wheel at the time of the accident, 25-year-old Esteban Jesús Apaza Infantes, was also severely injured and swiftly transported to the hospital. The fact that the driver's life is also in critical danger reveals the massive scale of the accident.

All the students injured in the accident were rapidly evacuated using ambulances dispatched from the Polobaya and Puquina regions, as well as private vehicles belonging to the local community. The injured students were taken to Honorio Delgado Espinoza Regional Hospital to receive emergency medical intervention. Following this incident, local residents called on the authorities to establish a safe public transportation system so that students would no longer have to travel in such dangerous conditions. The public demanded that this transportation inadequacy, which risks their children's lives, be resolved immediately and that urgent measures be taken. Whether the authorities will respond positively to these demands is of critical importance, as it will determine whether similar tragedies will occur in the future.
