F1 Avusturya GP: Russell leaves Verstappen behind to share championship lead with Antonelli

Regarded as one of the biggest favorites ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season, George Russell achieved a major success by winning the race he started from pole position at the Avusturya Grand Prix. With this result, Russell seized the opportunity to significantly close the points gap to his young teammate, who holds the championship lead.

From the very first moments of the race, a fierce battle took place on the track, with all the leading drivers starting on medium tires. While Russell maintained his position in the opening corners from pole position, Antonelli went off the track several times, and Lewis Hamilton overtook his Ferrari teammate Leclerc to move up to third. Having stayed out for five extra laps, Verstappen fell exactly 10 seconds behind Russell when he exited the pits, making his task in the closing stages of the race incredibly difficult. While Russell finished the race in first place, he was followed closely by Verstappen, who secured second place with his incredible rise during the race.
