TSK's New Command Center, Ay Yıldız Karargâhı, Opens in 2028

The construction of the Ay Yıldız Karargâhı, rapidly ongoing in the Etimesgut district of Ankara, represents a revolutionary transformation in the command structure of the Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri (TSK). This massive project, which will bring together the Milli Savunma Bakanlığı, Genelkurmay Başkanlığı, and main force commands under a single roof, will gain the title of one of the country's largest military campuses upon completion. Frequently referred to by the public as 'Türkiye's Pentagon,' this facility aims to bring together all decision-making mechanisms of the military and civil bureaucracy. Within the scope of the project, the facilities, built on a colossal area of 12,6 million square meters, will possess the technological infrastructure required by modern warfare and defense concepts. Thus, Türkiye will have restructured its defense bureaucracy and operational command centers in line with future needs.

One of the most striking technical details of the mega project stands out regarding the architectural design of the campus. It was stated that the buildings were specially planned to form the moon and star motif that adorns the Turkish flag when viewed from the air. The main structure, designed in a crescent shape, will house massive conference halls, coordination centers, and modern crisis management rooms to be used during critical periods. The section built in a star form will function as a reception and exhibition area where official delegations are welcomed and military history is displayed. Furthermore, right in the middle of these two symbolic structures, there will be a massive 23 thousand square-meter ceremonial area where official ceremonies and large military organizations can be held.

The construction of the new headquarters is positioned right next to the new and modern campus of the Milli İstihbarat Teşkilatı (MİT), located in the same area. This strategic proximity has the potential to visibly increase the operational integration and data-sharing capacity of Türkiye's military and intelligence units. When the massive site becomes fully operational, it is planned that approximately 15 thousand military and administrative personnel will be employed and serve there. The positioning of these two major institutions so close to each other provides a physical infrastructure that will allow national security policies to be implemented with a more holistic perspective, in a coordinated and rapid manner. This structure will not only serve as a workspace but will also act as a strategic center that brings Türkiye's defense and security capacity together under one roof.

The fundamental military objective of the Ay Yıldız Karargâhı project is to accelerate decision-making processes in complex crisis situations and military operations in the blink of an eye. The presence of the Milli Savunma Bakanlığı, Genelkurmay Başkanlığı, and the Land, Naval, and Air Forces Commands on the same campus will eliminate bureaucratic barriers and completely eradicate time losses caused by physical distances. Authorities emphasize that managing the air, land, and naval forces from a single physical center will provide incredible efficiency and coordination in joint operations. Thanks to the Joint Operations Center, which will be located within the campus, all data can be instantly collected and analyzed in a single center in the event of a potential war, counter-terrorism operation, or major natural disaster. Through this consolidation, the time it takes for critical decisions to be implemented in the field will be shortened, and the operational agility of the Turkish army will reach its maximum level.

The project, which is currently experiencing intense construction activity, is expected to be officially put into service in 2028, with all its units completed flawlessly. The 2028 target encompasses not only the completion of the buildings' construction but also the integration of the most advanced communication systems, cybersecurity infrastructures, and command-and-control software within them. With the completion of this mega project, the scattered command structure of the Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri, dating back to the twentieth century, will evolve into a modern, technological, and integrated structure fully aligned with the requirements of the twenty-first century. This modernization step is considered a milestone that will serve to increase Türkiye's weight not only in defense diplomacy but also on the regional and global military balance. Ultimately, the Ay Yıldız Karargâhı will become the heart of the national security architecture as a concrete reflection of the Turkish army's strategic vision for the coming century.
