Ukraine's UAVs Strike Russia's Oil Facilities and Tankers

Ukraine once again demonstrated its cross-border military capability by launching massive unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks against oil facilities in Russia's western and southern regions. During the attacks, oil storage facilities in the Tver and Stavropol regions, along with two oil tankers anchored in the Azak Sea, were engulfed in flames. These air raids are considered part of a strategy to paralyze Russia's energy infrastructure and restrict per capita fuel supply. Recent images from the region reveal that massive fires pose a severe threat to surrounding residential areas. Western analysts note that the Kyiv administration aims to turn the tide of the war in its favor by utilizing such deep-strike capabilities.

Russian officials announced that Ukraine-sourced UAV attacks have triggered a massive fuel crisis in the country's interior regions. Following the attacks, it was reported that fuel shortages occurred in some states, long queues formed in front of gas stations, and the implemented fuel rationing drew public backlash. As the fire at an oil depot in the Tver city rapidly grew, the local population was evacuated by security forces. Authorities in the Stavropol state also confirmed that surrounding apartment buildings were emptied after oil reserves in Vyazki were hit. This logistical collapse directly affects the daily lives of Russian civilians behind the front lines, carrying the potential to create war fatigue in the country.

While mutual attacks never lose momentum, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that 73 Ukraine UAVs were downed from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning. However, despite this air defense success, the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Russia launched 94 long-range UAVs and two ballistic missiles overnight. Although Ukraine's air defense systems neutralized and diverted 72 of the launched unmanned aerial vehicles, 19 penetrating UAVs and two missiles caused severe damage at 13 different locations. The Zelenskiy administration argues that the devastating impact created by Russian missiles and drones justifies their demand for more air defense systems from the international community. This intense firepower clearly proves that both sides have turned the war into a complete war of attrition.

While these fierce clashes continue on the front, a critical diplomatic meeting took place on the sidelines of the NATO Summit held in Türkiye. US President Donald Trump shared important news following a productive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskiy. It was announced that the US would grant the necessary license for Ukraine to locally produce the Patriot air defense systems it has long requested to intercept Russian missile attacks. This development is interpreted as one of the biggest diplomatic and military gains Kyiv has achieved since the beginning of the war. Transitioning to local production reduces Ukraine's foreign dependency, paving the way for a massive long-term increase in its front-line air defense capacity.

This constructive meeting between Trump and Zelenskiy took place in an atmosphere far removed from the tense and fractious dialogue experienced at the White House in February 2025. In the previous encounter at the White House, Trump harshly criticized Zelenskiy, whereas at the NATO summit meeting, he used highly praising expressions toward the Ukrainian leader. Trump, praising Zelenskiy's willingness to end the war and his administration, stated that he "did an amazing job" and was "very effective." The strengthening of Zelenskiy's diplomatic stance on the global stage is directly linked to the Ukrainian army's UAV attacks on Russian strategic facilities. The US decision to grant the production license for air defense systems seems likely to bring Kyiv into a much stronger position in the next phase of the conflict.
