Speedboat Carrying Indian Tourists Sinks in Vietnam, Leaving 15 Dead

15 people lost their lives following the capsizing of a speedboat carrying numerous Indian tourists in a tragic maritime accident off the coast of Vietnam's famous Phu Quoc Island. According to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Hanoi, all those who perished in the accident are Indian citizens, 10 of whom are from Tamil Nadu, 3 from Andhra Pradesh, and 2 from Kerala. According to information reported by the Vietnamese VN Express news portal, the incident occurred approximately 400 meters off the coast of Hon May Rut Ngoai island in the An Thoi archipelago, and it was reported that the passengers on the boat were returning from an island tour. It was announced that out of the 36 people on the boat at the time of the accident, 21 were rescued, and the bodies of all deceased tourists were recovered as part of the search and rescue efforts.

Immediately after the accident, other tourist boats in the area mobilized to pull the passengers from the capsized boat out of the water, and the severity of the situation was reported to Vietnamese authorities. Border guards, the navy, coast guard teams, and other relevant forces, arriving swiftly at the scene, launched a comprehensive search and rescue operation to find survivors and secure the area. According to eyewitness accounts, because the capsized boat had a closed structure, some passengers became trapped inside, making the rescue operations extremely difficult. Although choppy sea conditions and strong winds attempted to hinder the teams' efforts to reach those in the water by throwing lifebuoys, those rescued were brought ashore using jet skis. It was reported that first aid was administered to the injured brought ashore by bystanders at the scene, and the health of the survivors was brought under control.

Information provided by a survivor of the accident revealed striking details about how the incident unfolded. Nirmal Kumar, who managed to survive, stated that a large wave struck the boat and as a result of this impact, about 20 people were able to get out, while the other passengers remained trapped underwater. Kumar noted that because the boat had a closed model, those in the front managed to throw themselves out somehow, but the passengers in the back got trapped without being able to escape. Furthermore, the surviving tourist argued that safety measures on the boat were actually properly implemented and that officials had taken the necessary precautions, suggesting that the accident could have been caused by an unforeseen natural phenomenon. The exact cause of the incident has not yet been fully determined following inspections conducted by expert teams specializing in maritime accidents.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, following this tragic accident, closely followed the matter and ordered an immediate investigation to be launched. Prime Minister Hung requested that officials take the necessary steps to investigate the underlying causes of the accident and ensure that those found responsible are held accountable. Additionally, the Prime Minister demanded a review of the safety standards not only for the current accident area but for all waterways and maritime activities across the country. It is noted that this directive could bring new regulations in tourism and maritime transportation to prevent the recurrence of similar and preventable disasters. Authorities plan to introduce new and stricter inspection mechanisms to ensure the safety of tourist boat trips and island transfers in the region.

Following the tragic incident, high-ranking officials and political leaders from India swiftly issued statements offering their condolences for the deceased Indian citizens. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the accident in Vietnam and offered his condolences to the families and relatives of the victims. Modi emphasized that officials from the Indian Embassy and Consulate are closely monitoring the situation and working in coordination with Vietnamese authorities to provide all possible assistance to the injured and affected citizens. Prominent figures of the Indian opposition, Rahul Gandhi and Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge, also highlighted the devastating impact of the incident in their statements, calling on the government to take action.
