Protest Against Police Opening Fire on Refugees in Yunanistan

A large-scale operation was conducted regarding arson attacks on the homes of New Democracy Party (ND) officials in the Selanik and Girit regions of Yunanistan. Three suspects were detained in simultaneous morning operations carried out by counter-terrorism units. The aforementioned attacks took place on 1 Temmuz and tragically caused the death of one person. It was learned that the deceased was Vagiya Nestora and that four others were injured in the attacks. Authorities stated that the operation is ongoing to reach all suspects and that strict security measures have been taken.

Detailed information has begun to emerge regarding the identities and roles of the detained suspects in the act. According to information shared by authorities, the two men and one woman who were detained are believed to bear direct responsibility for the planning and execution of the attack. It is believed that one woman and one man among these individuals formed the team that carried out the operation on the ground, while the other male suspect assumed logistical and support duties. It was reported that the female suspect fled to Girit after the actions to avoid capture and was detained after being located in a house where she was hiding. Security forces believe these individuals are directly linked to the deadly attack on the Nestora family's home.

When the past security records of the captured suspects are examined, it is notable that they have close ties to anarchist circles. It was learned that the female suspect, captured in the Hanya district of Girit, was born in Atina but had been living in Selanik for a long time and actively participating in anarchist movements. Furthermore, it was revealed that this individual was convicted and imprisoned in 2022 for being a member of the 'Anarşist Eylem' organization and has a criminal record. It was stated that the other male suspect, born in 1997, is a member of the Selanik Anarşistler Konseyi and had been questioned several times by security forces in the past. The third suspect was determined to have provided his house to the other defendants involved in the attack for hiding purposes and provided external support to the events.

The investigation to shed light on the incident continues with the examination of numerous pieces of evidence. Police teams are conducting detailed searches both in the suspects' homes and other addresses used, looking for new evidence that will reveal all dimensions of the case. Analysts examining footage obtained from security cameras are trying to map out the network of relations by step-by-step tracking all the movements of the suspects before and after the attack. Additionally, despite the violent explosion and fire at the scene, it was reported that forensics teams collected material remnants and critical evidence that might contain DNA. Examining this evidence in a laboratory environment is expected to definitively identify the perpetrators of the attack and other possible names behind it.
