Zelenski: At least 14 people lost their lives in Russian attacks in the Kiev region

According to a statement made by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, at least 14 civilians lost their lives in the overnight bombardment conducted by Russia on the Kiev region. While many people were injured in the attacks, the Ukraine capital was heavily shaken and more than 30 residential buildings were damaged. These bloody attacks occurred just on the eve of the NATO summit to be held in Ankara. This tragedy experienced in the region once again revealed the brutality of the war and brought up the need for allies to take urgent action. The conflicts started after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in february 2022 and have been ongoing for nearly four years.
While 11 people lost their lives in the Russian attacks that continued throughout the night in the capital Kiev, 64 people were injured; among the wounded are two children. In addition to this, 3 more people were killed and 16 people were injured in separate attacks carried out in the Kiev region. In his statement, Zelenski noted that the Ukrainian air defense forces effectively intercepted Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and cruise missiles. However, he stated that ballistic missiles could not be stopped because they move at higher altitudes and much higher speeds, and that this situation caused heavy casualties. Authorities confirmed that the scale of the destruction experienced in the capital is quite vast and that infrastructure and civilian settlements suffered severe damage.
Ahead of the NATO summit to take place in Ankara, one of the most important agenda items for Zelenski will be his critical meeting with US President Donald Trump. The main purpose of the meeting is to gain new momentum for the peace efforts that have been ongoing for more than four years and are currently at a stalemate. In his assessment, a senior American official stated that the two leaders will thoroughly discuss ways to end the war and that the meeting will proceed in this direction. The same source added that after the summit, Trump is expected to have a meeting or establish communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin. These diplomatic moves show that the international community is trying to accelerate its renewed mediation efforts to end the conflicts in the region.
The Ukrainian leader called on his allies, particularly the United States and European countries, to take urgent and concrete steps. Zelenski emphasized that it is of vital importance for strong and clear decisions regarding air defense systems and ammunition to come out of the NATO summit. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also strongly condemned these new Russian attacks, stating that the situation is a clear proof of how urgently Ukraine needs air defense systems. Von der Leyen also confirmed that this critical security issue will be addressed and discussed in detail by all allies at the Ankara summit. Increasing international support to protect Ukraine's airspace has become a priority issue in terms of preventing civilian casualties.
On the other hand, the allies' military and financial support for Ukraine also appears set to mark a significant development within the framework of the NATO summit. According to information obtained from diplomatic sources, European countries and Canada, which are members of the alliance, are preparing to make a strong financial commitment that will continue in the coming years. In this context, it is planned to provide Ukraine with a total of 70 billion Euro in military aid for the years 2026 and 2027. This massive support package aims to help Kiev increase its long-term defense capacity and maintain its resistance on the battlefield. These decisions clearly demonstrate that the Western alliance stands by Ukraine to stop Russian aggression and re-establish regional stability.
