7-Eleven Redesigned Its Store for a Tree

Located in the city of Monterrey, Mexico, a unique 7-Eleven store with a 50-year-old walnut tree passing through it serves as a striking example of how architectural decisions can alter brand identity. The store has come to the fore not as an ordinary construction project, but as a structure specially designed to preserve the tree. While it is known that concrete usually leaves no room for nature in traditional urbanization processes, the opposite has occurred in this project. Instead of cutting down the tree, the construction team produced an unconventional solution by re-planning the building according to the tree. This situation has ensured that the store is not just a sales point, but also a symbolic structure in terms of environmental awareness and the power of design.

The story began when a walnut tree, approximately 50 years old, was found on the plot of land planned for the construction of a new 7-Eleven branch in the Contry Tesoro district of south Monterrey. The easiest and standard route for the team undertaking the project would have been to cut down the tree and continue construction from where it left off, but this path was not chosen. Instead, the entire building project was redesigned around this living entity for the sake of preserving the tree. The facade was specially shaped to wrap around the trunk of the tree, and the roof was designed with openings to not hinder the tree's growth. During this process, not only the architectural design changed, but construction techniques were also specialized to prevent damage to the tree's roots. As a result, an unconventional store intertwined with nature emerged in the center of the structure.

Contrary to popular belief, this store was not born as a marketing campaign, but in 2011 during the work of the 7-Eleven Mexico sustainability team aiming for the LEED certificate. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an international standard for energy and environmentally friendly buildings, and this project was one of the first branches aiming to receive this certificate. The biggest challenge encountered during construction was that the tree stood right where the building's foundation was planned. Architects saw this not as an obstacle, but as an opportunity at the heart of the project and revised all details accordingly. Ecological systems, such as collecting water dripping from the air conditioning to water the tree, were also integrated. Although making this decision made the construction process more costly and complex, a half-century-old tree was preserved.

In the internet world, while the store was known by the locals, it turned into a viral phenomenon after being shared on platforms like Reddit and 9GAG. Thousands of people met with surprise but admiration for an international chain redesigning an entire building just to protect a single tree. Thanks to its unconventional design, this store, which remains in people's memories, is also an example of the 'Von Restorff effect' in psychology. According to this theory, the human brain much more easily remembers the unusual item among identical objects. Additionally, according to biologist Edward O. Wilson's 'biophilia' theory, people naturally feel happy when intertwined with nature and green spaces. The presence of the tree creates a stress-reducing atmosphere inside the store and causes people to spend more time there.

This situation also brings the environmental problems in Mexican cities to the forefront. The National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC) and experts point out that heat islands are forming in cities due to increasing concretization, and temperatures rise to dangerous levels. Monterrey has experienced this situation severely in recent years, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees. An adult tree immediately possesses the shade, carbon capture, and cooling effects that new saplings can only provide years later, increasing the importance of protecting this tree. Therefore, it is seen that this project is not just an aesthetic design, but also a conscious architectural reflex against the climate crisis.
