Germany Becomes the New Arsenal to Produce US ATACMS Missiles

The global defense industry has entered a new era with the historic agreement signed by the American Lockheed Martin and German Rheinmetall companies. The two giant companies signed a memorandum of understanding for the production of long-range and highly destructive ATACMS tactical missiles on German soil. This agreement means that this ballistic missile system will be manufactured outside the borders of the United States for the first time. The decision has the potential to completely reshape the military production map in the Western world. Conducted with the direct support of the US government, this project aims to strengthen the arsenals of allied countries.

This strategic move was officially announced at the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum held in Ankara. The partnership, fully supported by the Washington and Berlin administrations, directly addresses security concerns on the European continent. The transatlantic alliance feels a great urgency to increase the supply of long-range munitions. Thus, it is aimed that NATO forces can access these weapons, which are of critical importance in today's complex conflict environments, much faster. The shortening of logistics processes will ensure that allies are less vulnerable in a potential crisis.

The heart of the production facility will be the Rheinmetall factory in Unterlüß, located in the Lower Saxony state of Germany. This massive industrial complex, which has about four thousand employees, is known as one of the company's most important production bases. The factory is currently working furiously on the construction of a new rocket motor facility that will accelerate production processes. This new infrastructure will enable all processes, from the assembly of missile components to the integration of motors, to be carried out from a single center. This centralization in regional production capacity is considered a step that will reinforce Europe's independence in the defense industry.

The production schedule of the new era is highly ambitious, and concrete steps are planned to be taken in 2027. In that year, the process will be officially launched by starting the manufacturing of solid-fuel motors and basic missile components. The production speed will be gradually increased to meet the intense weapon demands of European armies. In particular, the heavy military aid to conflict zones in recent years had caused the arsenals on the continent to deplete severely. Returning demands from the field clearly reveal that the continent needs hundreds of new missile units every year.

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger emphasizes that this step was taken to strengthen Europe's strategic autonomy. Reducing the dependence on transatlantic supply chains is seen as a great security guarantee for allied states. Lockheed Martin executives also believe that this partnership combines proven American technology on the battlefield with European industrial power. The massive production pressure on the company's Arkansas facilities in the US will be largely alleviated thanks to this new factory in Germany. This relief will allow Washington to focus much more on the research and development of next-generation missile systems.
