Intense Diplomacy and Defense Industry Program Ahead of NATO Summit in Ankara

According to the official calendar published by NATO, ahead of the summit to be held in Ankara on 7-8 July, Secretary General Mark Rutte will set the agenda with a press conference on 6 July. The first day of the summit, 7 July, will begin with the Defense Industry Forum to be held at the Ankara Chamber of Commerce Congress and Exhibition Center in the morning. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will deliver the opening speech at this forum, the purpose of which is to bring together high-level officials and sector leaders from member and partner countries for developments in innovation and industry. Following this, strategic messages regarding the defense industry will be delivered through speeches by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler, respectively.

Diplomatic traffic will continue to intensify in the evening hours of the first day, and an important meeting will be held at the Presidential Complex at 17.00. Foreign Ministers of member countries will discuss regional issues with representatives of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates within the scope of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI). At the same time, at the Ay Yıldız Headquarters, a special reception for defense ministers hosted by Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler is planned to conduct military and strategic consultations. These parallel meetings strongly highlight not only the military but also the political and regional cooperation dimensions of the summit.

At 18.30 in the evening, a reception and dinner will be organized at the Presidential Complex, hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his wife Emine Erdoğan, with the participation of heads of state and government and their spouses. This dinner will serve an important social function in terms of increasing informal contacts between leaders and emphasizing togetherness. Later, at 19.45, a working dinner of the NATO-Ukraine Council of Foreign Ministers will be held to discuss developments in Ukraine and the alliance's support. Finally, at 20.15, the first day will end with an intense diplomatic traffic under the titles of security and defense with the North Atlantic Council Working Dinner at the Level of Defense Ministers.

The morning of the second day of the summit, 8 July, will progress with protocol and ceremonial greetings. First, statements will be made by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and heads of allied states, followed by President Erdoğan and Secretary General Rutte welcoming the leaders. Following the ceremonial welcome, leaders are expected to take a 'family photo' together; this photo will be an important visual symbolizing the alliance's unity and solidarity. The most critical moment of the day will be the North Atlantic Council Meeting at the Level of Heads of State and Government starting at 11.15; strategic decisions regarding the future of the alliance and the communiqué may be discussed here.

One of the most curious and expected topics throughout the summit will be the bilateral meeting traffic. In particular, President Erdoğan is expected to meet with other leaders, including US President Donald Trump, to discuss bilateral relations and current crises. At 15.00, a press conference will be held by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to inform the public about the summit's final declaration and decisions. At the end of the two-day marathon, the results emerging from the leaders' mutual contacts will shape NATO's future vision and give new signals regarding the global security architecture.
