Baby declared dead in Arizona found alive in the morgue

In an incident that occurred in the Arizona state of the USA and attracted international attention, a medical scandal came to light after an 18-month-old baby was hospitalized on suspicion of drowning in a pool. The child, found face down and motionless by the baby's family, was given prolonged CPR and life support by emergency medical teams at the scene. Following this, the baby was urgently transferred to the nearest hospital, as it was thought to be in a life-threatening condition. As a result of the interventions at the hospital, the doctor declared that the child had passed away, plunging the family into great grief. However, developments indicated that a medical error had occurred from the very beginning of the incident.

One and a half hours after the baby admitted to the hospital was evaluated, the doctor reported that the baby had passed away. Some police officers investigating the incident noticed that the baby was still showing signs of life and informed the doctor of the situation. However, it was claimed that the doctor ignored the warnings of the police, giving a harsh reaction stating that he received his medical training for the authority to make decisions in such situations. In the footage from the doctor's body camera, he was seen officially declaring the time of death provided there were no objections and asking for a moment of silence. These moments paved the way for a serious administrative and legal investigation in the later stages of the incident.

Exactly five hours passed after the doctor declared the time of death, and it was decided to transfer the child's body to the morgue for the body to be handed over. When the baby was brought to the morgue, officials noticed in astonishment that the baby was breathing and immediately started medical intervention. Upon this, the baby was urgently transferred to another hospital by air ambulance due to the need for advanced care. Following the intensive care and treatment processes here, the baby's health condition improved and was eventually discharged from the hospital. This development was a great source of relief for the family, but it also called into question the professionalism of the hospital staff who performed the initial intervention.

In the police report regarding the incident, it was emphasized that no medical records were kept indicating that the baby showed signs of life, and therefore, it could not be clearly determined how the process unfolded. Scott Holden, the lawyer of the doctor who performed the initial intervention, stated that no official statement would be made on the matter, citing patient privacy and respect for the deep pain experienced by the family. On the other hand, in a written statement made by the hospital management, it was expressed that the incident was being investigated in detail in all its aspects. In the statement, it was noted that all care and evaluation processes were reviewed from top to bottom to prevent similar and tragic situations from happening again, describing the incident as a 'heartbreaking event'.

It was revealed that there were serious suspicions of parental neglect in the background of the incident. Police teams reported that they detected a strong smell of drugs in the house where the accident occurred, and this situation might have caused the child to access the pool unsupervised. In line with these findings, law enforcement recommended to the prosecutor's office to bring charges of child neglect against the parents. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced that the investigation into the matter was ongoing and that no decision had yet been made on whether to file an official lawsuit against the parents.
