Why Does Europe Need Turkey?

Relations between Europe and Türkiye have always held strategic importance, despite various fluctuations over the years. Due to its geographical location at the intersection of the European and Asian continents, Türkiye is a vital power forming the eastern border of the continent. In recent years, the increase in regional conflicts, the need to diversify energy supply routes, and uncertainties regarding global security are pushing European leaders to reassess their relations with Türkiye. European policymakers continue to view Türkiye's regional influence and military capacity as an integral part of Europe's security architecture. This situation demonstrates that diplomatic ties between the parties can never be completely severed.

Security and defense rank among the most fundamental areas where Europe needs Türkiye. Possessing NATO's second-largest conventional army, Türkiye is one of the most critical countries on the eastern flank of the Atlantic alliance. Particularly considering the instabilities in strategic regions such as the Black Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Middle East, Türkiye's military presence constitutes a major balancing element. It is inevitable that the European Union needs the logistical and operational support of the Turkish army for its common defense and security policies to be successful. Therefore, Türkiye is an indispensable ally in protecting the continent's borders and managing potential crises.

Economic and commercial ties constitute another crucial element holding the two sides together. The long-standing Customs Union agreement has deepened trade integration between Türkiye and European countries. The European Union is both Türkiye's largest export and largest import partner. For major European economies such as Germany, Italy, and France, the Turkish market serves as both a production base and a significant consumer area. Factors such as hosting immigrants, securing logistical routes, and the growth of the middle class make it imperative to advance economic cooperation even further. For European investors, Türkiye continues to offer an attractive opportunity with its young population and dynamic market.

Energy security and migration policies are two critical issues that increase Europe's strategic dependence on Türkiye. In line with Europe's goals to reduce its dependence on Russian natural gas, Türkiye's potential as an energy terminal and transit country is exceedingly high. In transporting Caspian Sea and Middle Eastern resources to Europe, Türkiye offers one of the safest and shortest routes. Furthermore, regarding the management of irregular migration crises, Türkiye functions as a buffer zone protecting Europe's internal borders by hosting millions of asylum seekers. For this reason, cooperation between Europe and Türkiye is of vital importance in bringing migration flows under control and ensuring energy supply diversity.

Looking to the future, it is essential for Europe to maintain a constructive dialogue with Türkiye on its path to becoming a global power. Joint action by both parties is necessary to resolve issues such as climate change, counter-terrorism, international terrorism, and global supply chain crises. Although political disagreements may occasionally cause tensions, common interests must always come to the forefront. Keeping diplomatic channels open, building mutual trust, and expanding areas of cooperation will yield results beneficial to both Europe and Türkiye. At this point, the question of why Europe needs Türkiye is understood much more clearly in the light of geopolitical, economic, and strategic realities.
