Serbia Bans Entry for BIRN Reporter: "They Will Not Put Me in the Same Boat as Dragan Vučićević"

One of the prominent reporters of the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network BIRN announced that a ban on entering the country has been imposed on them by the Serbian authorities. The journalist in question shared with the public the events that took place while they were in transit through Belgrade on their way to Roma, the capital of Italy. They had planned to leave the airport during a long layover between flights and go to the city center to meet with colleagues. However, they were unexpectedly stopped while handing over their passport to the police officials. The officials only told the journalist that there was a record about them in the system and that they needed to come with them.

During the incident, the journalist was told that the authorities acted in accordance with a decision previously entered into the system by the Serbian authorities. The reporter stated that no official justification was provided to them during this process and that they experienced great astonishment at what had happened. The practice in question has brought back to the agenda concerns about how administrative procedures applied to individuals entering the country or transiting can be used for political motives. The journalist described the treatment they faced while intending to have a safe and ordinary meeting with their colleagues as unacceptable. Following the incident, the reporter strongly objected to their name being framed in the same context as Dragan J. Vučićević. Dragan J. The BIRN reporter explicitly stated that under no circumstances would they allow their professional stance to be associated with such individuals. They noted that such a comparison is unacceptable in terms of their own journalistic principles and editorial independence.
