Embezzlement operation targeting Bolu Municipality: General Secretary Yıldız arrested

As part of the investigation conducted by the Bolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a large-scale operation was carried out targeting Bolu Municipality and its subsidiary companies. In the raids carried out simultaneously by gendarmerie teams on the morning of 1 July, many people were detained on charges of 'embezzlement' and 'laundering of assets derived from crime'. At the center of the operation were Özgür Nihat Yıldız, the General Manager of Bolu Municipal Companies and also the Private Secretary, and many names serving in municipal subsidiaries. Detailed searches were conducted at both the residences of the suspects and their offices in the municipal service building, and numerous documents and digital materials considered to be evidence of crime were seized. As the investigation deepened, the total number of suspects rose to 12 as of 2 July, along with other individuals called to testify.

The 12 detainees were referred to the courthouse after the completion of their procedures at the Bolu Provincial Gendarmerie Command. 3 of the suspects, whose statements were taken by the prosecutor's office, were released and discharged from the process depending on the scope of the investigation and their situation. On the other hand, in the trial of the 9 suspects brought before the duty penal judge of peace, the court decided to apply judicial control measures to 8 of them as a result of the evaluation. These 8 people were released subject to certain bail decisions such as a travel ban, while it was stated that they would be under supervision during the judicial process. The court panel announced their decisions as a result of their examination regarding the state of the evidence and the nature of the crime.

The most striking aspect of the operation was the fate of Bolu Municipality Private Secretary Özgür Nihat Yıldız. Yıldız was referred to the court with a request for his arrest on the grounds of serious accusations such as 'embezzlement' and 'laundering of assets derived from crime' directed at him and the sufficiency of the evidence collected. As a result of the trial, the judiciary decided to continue Yıldız's detention and ordered him to be sent to prison. This decision once again brought to light how serious the administrative structure within the municipality and the course of the investigation were.

The statements of other suspects named İ.Ç., O.Ö., S.G., V.Y., S.G., Y.G., İ.G., D.M. and A.K., who were personnel in municipal companies, were also taken and they were involved in the process. It is expected that the examination of the documents and digital data seized within the scope of the investigation will play a decisive role in determining the course of the operation and whether there are new suspects. This investigation conducted by the Bolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office puts allegations regarding administrative law and unethical behavior in public institutions under the microscope.

While the incident caused wide repercussions in the Bolu local press and public opinion, it became a matter of curiosity whether the municipal administration would make an official statement on the subject.
