Brazilian Congress expedites bill that will restrict Pantanal environmental protection area

The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies approved an urgency request to expedite a bill aimed at annulling the Lula government's decree expanding an environmental protection area in the Pantanal, during an empty session. The bill, introduced by pro-Bolsonaro Deputy Coronel Fernanda, claims that the views of cattle ranchers and the local population in the region were not taken into account and that it creates legal uncertainty.

The Ministry of the Environment, which opposes the bill, stated that a comprehensive public consultation involving approximately 350 people and meetings with local fishing communities were held before the decree was published. The ministry emphasized that the expansion is of great importance to protect biodiversity and defend the ecosystem.

Despite this, the bill was placed on the agenda to be voted on directly in the plenary session of the Congress and was accepted by 276 votes in favor to 139 votes against. The passage of the bill caused divisions between ruling and opposition deputies, while discussions continue regarding the impacts of the issue on the environment and the local economy.
