Toxic gas leak at industrial facility in Manaus, Brazil: 16 people hospitalized

Following a toxic gas leak in an industrial area of Manaus, Brazil, 16 people were referred to health facilities. According to a statement from the Amazonas State Health Secretariat, all patients taken to the hospitals were reported to be in stable clinical condition and under medical evaluation. The incident was caused by a leak of a chemical substance called styrene, which is used in the production of plastics and resins.

It was announced that the leak occurred as a result of a chemical reaction in the facility's storage tank. As the volume of the liquid expanded, the tank's safety valve released gas into the system. Firefighting teams stated that the tank did not crack and that the release occurred directly from the safety valve, announcing that they had the situation under control. Additionally, cooling operations for the tank are continuing in order to prevent a new leak.

The intense and sharp smell surpassed the industrial area and was also noticed by residents in different neighborhoods of the city. Authorities stated that the smell of the gas was similar to solvent or paint, warning those exposed to go to the emergency room if they experienced any symptoms. Security forces are continuing their work until the procedures at the scene are completed.
