Serbia approved the extradition of Stoyan Mavrodiev, the former chairman of the Bulgarian Development Bank (BDB). Mavrodiev was arrested in Belgrade in June of last year and had been wanted since August 2024. A corruption investigation is being conducted against him on the allegation that he embezzled a 150 million lev loan from the bank. In his statements regarding the matter, Minister of Interior Ivan Demerciev referred to previous remarks suggesting that Mavrodiev might request to return to Bulgaria voluntarily. It was reported that the Serbian court made the decision without proceedings and that the defendant will be transferred to Bulgaria shortly.

Bulgarian Minister of Interior Ivan Demerciev also touched upon other important topics on the country's agenda, announcing that a detailed list regarding Delyan Peevski's flights will soon be presented to the Members of Parliament. This list, prepared by the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP), includes individuals allegedly linked to Peevski and their corporate connections. Demerciev stated that the members of parliament could examine these names and assess for themselves whether they participate in public procurement or have any connection to the former 'KTB case'. Furthermore, the minister criticized the complaints filed by Kalin Stoyanov against him, deeming them 'ineffective', and referenced the incident known as PNR-gate. He emphasized that he interpreted Stoyanov's actions as attempts by Peevski to apply pressure.

The government's fiscal policies and the 2026 budget draft also continue to be one of the main topics of debate in the country. The Council of Ministers decided to approve an additional fund of approximately 51.8 million euro for the activities of the Ministry of Interior in 2026. In contrast, former Minister of Economy and Member of Parliament Bogdan Bogdanov severely criticized the uncertainties and unjustified expenditures in the proposed budget. Bogdanov warned that uncontrolled spending could further increase the state's deficit and debts. Officials argue that the government's strategy for increasing revenues and controlling expenditures is far from clear.

In the international arena, Bulgaria announced its decision not to veto the European Union's 21st sanctions package against Russia. However, Minister of Defense Dimitar Stoyanov stated that he has reservations regarding certain individuals included in the sanctions list. On the other hand, Bulgaria and Serbia signed an intergovernmental agreement to open a new joint border crossing named 'Kalotina 2 - Gradina 2' in order to increase border capacity. The aim of this project was announced as significantly relieving border traffic in the region and facilitating commercial transportation between the two countries. It was shared that last year, more than 5.4 million people passed through the Kalotina border crossing alone.

Looking at local news, a striking corruption allegation came to the fore in the municipality of Stambolovo in the Hasskovo region. According to the allegation, the local administration made an 880 thousand euro payment by organizing a tender to replace a non-existent water pipeline. The investigation launched by the police regarding the matter raised serious doubts about how public resources are managed. In the capital, Sofya, accusations were also voiced by municipal council member Vanya Grigorova regarding irregular practices at a waste management facility, bringing forward claims of illegal waste dumping. Additionally, a large-scale fire that broke out in an area near the 'Struma' highway in the General Todorov municipality, causing one person to suffer severe burns, brought the emergency response processes in the region back to the agenda.
