Bulgaria and Serbia Agreed on the New Border Crossing 'Kalotina 2'

Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev and Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic signed a memorandum of understanding to open a new border crossing aimed at facilitating border transitions between their countries. With the implementation of this new border crossing point named 'Kalotina 2 - Gradina 2', it is aimed to significantly ease transportation between the two countries. At the joint press conference held after the official opening ceremony, both ministers emphasized the importance of this step in bilateral relations. Authorities state that this new gate will be a critical solution to relieve the congestion faced by citizens living in the border region and passengers traveling between the two countries. This cooperation is considered a concrete indicator that diplomatic and practical dialogue between border countries in the Balkans has been strengthened.

The two ministers announced that they not only focused on opening a new border crossing but also discussed various additional measures to enable people to cross the border more easily and quickly. In his statement, Demerdzhiev emphasized that border security is undoubtedly extremely important, but ensuring that crossings are accessible and practical is also a major priority for them. The relevant institutions of both countries are working on different projects to reduce waiting times at existing border gates. In this context, it was stated that planning must be done to prevent potential disruptions that could occur during busy periods such as the summer season. Similarly, joint working procedures between customs and police teams are planned to be made more efficient within this new framework.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, expressing his satisfaction in working with his Bulgarian counterpart, reminded that there is a strong tradition of cooperation established between the two countries over the years. Dacic drew attention to the significant increase in border mobility, especially with the beginning of the summer period, and shared an important statistic. Accordingly, the number of people crossing the border has already reached 3 million within a short period following the official start of the summer months. This massive figure reveals how strained the capacity of the existing border crossings is and how urgently new alternative transit points are needed. The heavy human traffic between the two countries proves how vibrant regional mobility is, both in terms of tourism and human dimensions such as family visits.

On the other hand, one of the topics brought up during the press conference was the questions regarding the extradition process of the former Bulgarian executive Stoyan Mavrodiev, which is allegedly related to the former United Nations General Assembly President and former Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, upon Bulgaria's request. When a journalist asked about the latest status regarding the extradition of Mavrodiev from Serbia to Bulgaria, Minister Demerdzhiev made a clear assessment. Demerdzhiev stated that organizational and legal preparations regarding the extradition process are currently being actively carried out. Noting that the authorities are about to take the necessary steps for this process, the minister expressed his expectations that the extradition of the former executive to his country could take place within days. This situation shows that the two countries are determined to support each other not only in border security and transportation but also in legal cooperation matters.

Considered as a whole, this new agreement signed between Bulgaria and Serbia represents merely one of the decisive steps taken by the two neighboring countries towards regional integration and increasing mutual trust. With the 'Kalotina 2' border crossing becoming operational, this route, which is an important part of the transit transportation network between the European Union and the Balkans, is expected to become more functional.
