The Genius Who Changed the World: The Interesting Life Story of Nikola Tesla

Born on 10 July 1856 in the town of Smiljan within the borders of the Austrian Empire, Nikola Tesla is considered one of the greatest inventors and visionaries in human history. His groundbreaking discoveries regarding the alternating current (AC) system permanently changed the world by completely reshaping the modern electrical infrastructure. Even today, his name is invoked as a symbol of genius and advanced technology, and his work continues to be a source of inspiration for many different scientific disciplines. However, this brilliant intellect and tremendous scientific success were intertwined with a highly turbulent, challenging, and solitary life. The story of Tesla, who suffered major financial collapses during his lifetime, could not realize many of his projects, and lived alone until the end of his life, is one of the most tragic yet inspiring life stories in the scientific world.

Tesla's father, Milutin, served as a Serbian Orthodox priest; his mother, Georgina, possessed an extremely practical intellect despite lacking a formal education. His mother's ability to skillfully craft various mechanical tools and devices left a profound impact on Tesla and became one of his greatest sources of inspiration. Demonstrating a tremendous aptitude for mathematics and physics from a young age, Tesla astonished even his teachers during his school years. Because of his capacity to perform complex mathematical calculations entirely in his mind without using a pencil, his professors could not help but think he was memorizing the lessons or somehow cheating. These extraordinary mental capabilities also formed the foundation of his massive engineering projects in the future.

Continuing his educational life by studying engineering in Graz, Tesla never officially graduated from university. Instead of an academic title or official graduation, he chose to forge his own unique path and become an entirely practical inventor. In 1884, making a monumental decision that would completely change his life, he immigrated to the United States full of hope. Here, he briefly started working for another famous inventor of the era, Thomas Edison, but this partnership did not last long. The working process between the two geniuses quickly ended due to profound philosophical and technical disagreements regarding the future and development of electrical systems.

While Tesla firmly believed that the future of electrical energy lay in alternating current (AC), Edison insisted on the direct current (DC) system he developed and defended it intensely. Parting ways with Edison, Tesla sold his revolutionary patents regarding the polyphase system and induction motor to the Westinghouse company. This historic agreement initiated the world's first true electrical revolution and enabled the establishment of modern energy distribution networks. The victory of alternating current changed the course of human history by making it possible to transmit electricity safely and economically over long distances. Through this, Tesla became recognized worldwide not just as an inventor, but also as one of the architects of the modern era.

In addition to this great victory in the alternating current wars, Tesla's visionary intellect extended to much broader and, for that time, unimaginable technologies. The Tesla Coil, which bears his name today and is famous for high-voltage electrical experiments, remote control technology, and groundbreaking experiments on wireless energy transmission are his works. Furthermore, he provided highly critical contributions to the laying of the foundations and the development of radio and X-ray (roentgen) technologies. Unfortunately, this genius, who left a massive legacy to the science and engineering literature by receiving approximately 300 patents in various countries throughout his life, spent the final period of his life alone. Despite his world-changing inventions and awe-inspiring intellect, he never married, suffered financial hardships, and spent his final days completely alone in a New York hotel room.
