Environment and Education-Focused Problem Solving in a Village by University Students

Students from Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Indonesia arrived in Tupabbiring Village as part of their KKN (Community Service Program) programs. This thematic project aims to find practical solutions to the daily problems of the people living in the region. Before starting their fieldwork, the students communicated directly with the villagers to identify their needs on-site. Thus, interventions fully suited to local dynamics were developed instead of ready-made projects brought from outside. This year's focal points of the thematic KKN program are solving environmental problems and providing support for education.

The most important feature of the project is that all programs are shaped based on field observations. From their first day in the village, the students established mutual dialogue with the local people to analyze the current situation. This in-depth analysis process clearly revealed in which areas the public needed help the most. As a result of meetings and interviews, a roadmap was drawn to produce not only superficial but also permanent solutions. In this way, academic knowledge and the real needs of the village were successfully blended. Every idea and project produced has the potential to directly improve the daily lives of the public.

Environmental management stands out as one of the most critical pillars of these community service projects. Unplanned waste management or the negative environmental impacts of agricultural activities in rural areas are among the main topics emphasized by the students. Young students, under the consultancy of expert academics, offer sustainable methods to protect the natural ecosystem of the village. Awareness campaigns are carried out with great care so that the local people can adapt to these eco-friendly practices. The goal is not only to solve existing environmental problems but also to create an ecological awareness for future generations. Consequently, Tupabbiring Village finds the opportunity to exhibit an eco-friendly model in rural development.

Another fundamental pillar of the project is the contribution made to the education of the local people. Interventions in the field of education focus particularly on increasing the quality of learning for school-age children and raising literacy rates. While university students help village children with their lessons, they also try to instill a vision of higher education in them. In addition, various workshops such as hygiene, health, and basic environmental education are organized for adults. Such interactive activities accelerate the overall cultural development of the village beyond mere knowledge transfer. Thanks to the educational efforts, it is aimed to increase the welfare level of the society in the long term.

In summary, this thematic KKN initiative by Hasanuddin University has built a very strong bridge between the villagers and academics. This model, based on direct observation and continuous dialogue, is an excellent example showing how development projects can be implemented more realistically.
