Senate Ethics Committee Clears Gallego, Luna Responds with 'Scumbag' Remarks

The Senate Ethics Committee dismissed the sexual misconduct and campaign finance violation allegations against Arizona Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego due to insufficient evidence. Following a comprehensive investigation lasting approximately one month, the committee announced in an official letter that it could not find any concrete evidence to support the allegations in question. The committee emphasized that there was no evidence indicating that Gallego's actions violated federal laws, Senate rules, or relevant standards of conduct. This decision turned into a massive defeat for his political rivals who had put Gallego under extreme pressure and tried to discredit him during this process. In his statement following the decision, Gallego noted that he had maintained from the very beginning that these allegations were a conspiracy theory fabricated by far-right activists.

This process had begun with "highly disturbing" allegations brought forward by Florida Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna following the scandal-ridden downfall of former California Representative Eric Swalwell. Swalwell had been forced to resign from the House of Representatives after a striking report was published alleging that he had sexually assaulted a former employee. Because Gallego had been a long-time close friend of Swalwell, he admitted that his judgment regarding the Washington gossip had become clouded and quickly tried to distance himself from the name. However, using this close relationship and the Washington rumors, Luna brought serious charges targeting Gallego. The initiation of the investigation laid bare the deep political polarization within Congress and the tendency of rivals to weaponize the ethics process.

Following the Ethics Committee's decision to clear him, Gallego made a very harsh statement, explicitly expressing that he expected an apology from his rival Luna. Accusing Luna of turning the ethics process into a weapon for her own political interests rather than investigating historical corruption, Gallego demanded an apology. He also promised to continue working for the people of Arizona and to focus on holding pro-Trump Republicans accountable for the high cost of living and global conflicts. However, as political observers also pointed out, it quickly became clear that the likelihood of Luna apologizing was extremely low. This was because Luna furiously reacted to the decision with a message published on the social media platform X, making her stance perfectly clear.

In her statement from her X account, Luna argued that the allegations targeting Gallego were never a conspiracy theory, describing him as "a terrible example of a representative." Continuing her words without any hesitation, Luna explicitly accused Gallego of abandoning his pregnant wife during his Senate campaign, making severe personal allegations. She virtually issued a threat, claiming that everyone in Washington talks to each other and that eventually, journalists would bring Gallego's correspondences to light. Advising Gallego to continue raising money for his legal defense fund, Luna used a highly provocative phrase: "Once a scumbag, always a scumbag." This harsh outburst demonstrated that the divide between the two figures would not be bridged and that political tension would continue in the future.

Recently, Gallego has been under the strict scrutiny of the public eye not only because of the ethics committee allegations, but also due to a report surfaced by Politico. The report in question alleged that Gallego had spent thousands of dollars from his campaign funds on expenses such as luxury travel, Super Bowl tickets, and a babysitter. Gallego immediately defended himself, stating that these expenses were not a new situation, and claimed that it was an entirely legal process. Citing rising childcare costs and the budget burdens on American families, Gallego claimed that as long as it is permitted by federal laws, both Democratic and Republican members of Congress make similar expenditures. All these debates proved once again the deep division in American politics and how complex the debates over transparency regarding campaign finance for elected officials have become.
