Transformation of Piazza Dallapiccola in Florence: 2.9 million euro restoration project begins

The Florence municipal administration has approved a comprehensive project worth 2.9 million euros for the radical renewal of Piazza Pier Luigi Dallapiccola, which has been grappling with structural problems for years. Announced on July 4, 2026, this investment aims to resolve unseen problems accumulating underground by restoring the complex structural system beneath the square. Despite the square continuing to function as a large public space, continuous leaks in the lower levels had caused serious damage to the walls, ceilings, and rainwater drainage systems over the years. Municipal officials emphasize that this work is not merely simple maintenance, but a radical solution to preserve the structural integrity of the area.

The primary objective of the project is to address structural damages in the unseen parts of the square and strengthen the necessary infrastructure to minimize future risks. Moisture and leakage issues in the ground floor levels beneath the square and building entrances had threatened the building's static health, requiring urgent intervention. The scope of work includes deep consolidation of load-bearing structures and a complete renewal on the surface. In this context, a new waterproofing system using high-performance synthetic membranes will be applied to the square's ground, and a modernized network for rainwater discharge will be established.

The technical infrastructure works have been designed to increase the area's resilience against possible flooding risks by taking into account rainfall parameters calculated according to the latest meteorological data from the Toscana region. The existing drainage system will be resized due to experienced blockages and insufficient drainage, ensuring rainwater is removed more efficiently. Additionally, physical arrangements will be made to eliminate level differences hindering accessibility to the square and create a flat ground, allowing all citizens to easily access the area. Thus, the square will become both technically safer and more comfortable in terms of usage.

Once the structural repair works are completed, the Florence municipality will not stop and will make the square more resilient against climatic challenges through a series of additional projects prepared by the environment department. To reduce the "heat island" effect caused by the square's current exposure to full sun and lack of shaded areas, landscaping arrangements will be made in line with the Green Plan targets accepted in 2025. Accordingly, a new design developed with the participation of local residents involves a refunctioning process that highlights the area's sustainability and ecological harmony.

While this renewal process finds financial support within the 2026-2028 three-year investment plan, construction works are expected to last approximately 18 months following the completion of the tender process. Deputy Mayor Paola Galgani states that they will not be satisfied with only repairing structural damages, but aim to transform the area into an urban transformation example by designing it together with the community. With the completion of the project, Piazza Dallapiccola will become not just a physically renewed square, but also a vibrant living space that adapts to climate change and responds to the needs of citizens.
