More than 3,000 people evacuated as forest fire breaks out in southern France

The fire that started in the town of Canet-en-Roussillon in the Pyrénées-Orientals department of southern France, quickly spiraled out of control with the effect of the wind and caused great panic in the region. According to reports in the local press, although the center of the incident is a camp site, due to the intensity of the flames and the speed of spread, a large-scale evacuation operation had to be initiated from the surrounding areas at risk as well. While a large number of fire crews were dispatched to the region, officials stated that they are making intense efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to settlements.

It was stated that approximately 220 firefighters were mobilized to the scene. The teams are working day and night to prevent the fire from damaging residential units and other structures. While the height of the flames and changes in wind direction are shown among the factors that make the work of fire crews difficult, it is reported that aerial interventions are also supported in an attempt to bring the fire under control. Although the cause of the fire has not been fully determined yet, the fire grew rapidly due to high temperatures and the effect of the wind.

The fact that there were no casualties in the fire is described as the greatest luck, while material damage is seen to be quite heavy. It was announced that 256 bungalows in the camping area surrendered to the flames and became unusable. However, information came that the fire was not limited to the camping area but also threatened a nearby industrial facility and a section of the building caught fire. In particular, it was revealed that the building belonging to a company producing motorized sea vehicles was affected by the fire, with images shared on social media.

In the images reflected on social media, thick smoke rising from the building where the administrative unit of the motorized sea vehicle producing company is located was observed. It was understood that a part of the building was in flames and the fire crews carried out an intense intervention in this region. Although a large part of the company's production facility was not damaged, it is estimated that the damage in the administrative section may disrupt the workflow, albeit for a short time. Other facilities and houses in the region continue to be monitored cautiously against the risk of flames spreading.

Forest fire cases, which increase especially in the summer months across France, continue to be a serious problem this summer season as well. Along with the fire in Canet-en-Roussillon, data was shared that a total of approximately 9 thousand hectares of land have burned in fires that broke out across the country this summer season. Officials emphasize that heat waves and drought increase the risk of fire, and citizens must be extremely careful, especially in forested areas and while having picnics. Warnings are being made that most causes of fires are human-origin and even the slightest carelessness can lead to great disasters.
