Reaction to Reputation Attack from Lawyer Semra Ilık, Who Was Given a Decision of Non-Prosecution

Within the scope of an investigation conducted by the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a significant development occurred regarding Şanlıurfa-based lawyer Semra Ilık. In the investigation file, it was determined that Ilık did not have any organizational links with Selahattin Yılmaz and other suspects. In line with these determinations, a decision of non-prosecution was made, explicitly stating there was 'no organizational link'. However, the lawyer's attorneys and herself state that these positive developments were not reflected to the public. Publishing a written statement after the non-prosecution decision, Semra Ilık alleged that conscious censorship and manipulation were applied in the media. According to Ilık, official documents and determinations in her favor in the investigation file were intentionally hidden in the media. She emphasized that this situation led to a severe violation of the 'right not to be stigmatized', which is a constitutional right. It was claimed that during the investigation process, incomplete and one-sided information was leaked in an attempt to steer the media's judicial process. Ilık stated that this situation turned into a clear assassination of her reputation.

Stating that she preferred to be patient during the legal process, Ilık avoided engaging in a public debate so far out of respect for the independence of the judiciary. She noted that she only awaited the decision to be given by the law, but stated that today the same file has been brought back to the agenda through different methods. She said that during this process, an attempt was made to create a new perception against her and her professional reputation was targeted. She added that her long-standing legal and professional victimization has been further deepened by these news reports.

Touching upon the concept of press freedom in her statement, the lawyer underlined that press freedom does not give the right to pre-judge individuals. Contrary to the negative image created in the public eye, she reminded that judicial authorities ruled in her favor. She announced that the necessary legal steps were taken and criminal complaints were filed in order to protect her targeted professional reputation. She promised that the criminal and legal processes would be followed with great care and that no concessions would ever be made. Ilık also stated that she would continue her legal struggle to the end.

Touching upon her future steps, Ilık emphasized that she would continue to make her statements only before independent judicial authorities. She expressed her belief that the supremacy of law would prevail over any perception management and manipulation attempts. While assuring the public that justice would be served, she stated that she would continue her struggle to protect her professional honor.
